I recently drove a Lexus IS 220 TDI (well I think they called it a TDI and it was 2.2 litre).
I was immediately aware of how, the light sporty car wanted to leap foward but had to wait for the engine at each shift. It made light of hills and long drags in third but didnt like the down shifts or any nippiness.
I came away thinking "My 00 A3 1.6 gasser is a better car and more fun" It was the wrong engine for that car IMO.
In the link below the 1.9 TDI is heralded as the better option over the hybrid prius.
I havent driven a small Audi TDI but I just hope the US isnt put off diesel by someone pushing it as the "Sporty" option.
Diesel has come of age lately, it gives you torque, fuel economy, less yes unbelievably less pollutants but its no pannacea.

http://www.germancarblog.com/2008/02/audi-a3-19-tdie-who-needs-toyota-prius.html</a
