But I heard PES wanted $700 just for the programming they had already created.

1) If you ask PES really nicely they might sell you the programming. It's not like a real part that they have to produce.
2) I believe GIAC keeps all programming on file, they might be able to sell it directly.
3) I have the G1, might be possible to make a copy of my chip.

What was suggested to me was it might have been produced BY GIAC for PES. So, I called PES and asked them (nicely) if they could make another ECU. They told me no way, but I could buy a G2.

Of course I may have not been talking to the right person.

The reason I didn't buy this kit is:

I have personally had bad luck with buying an incomplete item and trying to piece it together so I can save some money. So I want nothing to do with this particular kit. If you are willing to take a shot, do it, and report back.

All I can do is hope this person has the know-how, money and patience to make it work. To me it was never really about saving money but about having something custom that I put together with my own two hands. I'm a masochist that way :)

I am trying to copy exactly what you have done. Did you install a high boost pulley yet??

I think I may have to go G2 on this one and find a way to intercool it or keep it cooler somehow. I think it can be done but it will be a PITA and I might have to buy a different hood.

Best of luck to whoever buys that kit.

and even if PES out and out refused to sell you the G1 programming, there would be ways to get around it. Copying programming from one chip to another is fairly simple you know.

Have you done it before?? I've always wondered how it was done.

Yeah, the pulley's been on for a while. Gained some power but lost some idle smoothness, thus the ARC1.

Is it only at idle or are you trying to compensate for the rich condition that has been documented on g1's? Do you think the pulley system makes it worse?
Sorry for all the questions, I am interested in learning more about the 2.8 engine, I figure you/walter are 2 of the best folks to talk to about tuning the 30v.

I haven't seen any signs of richness at WOT since the install of the intercooler. The theory is that without the intercooler the G1 heats up the air to the point where the ECU dumps extra fuel in to cool down cylinders. With the intercooler in place this no longer happens.

There is still a problem with richness @idle. The more boost there is the more off the ratio is. This manifests itself at "lumpy", jerky throttle and rough idle when coming to a stop. Basically as I stop the idle becomes shaky but after a couple seconds the ECU kicks in and corrects the mixture and the idle smooths out. I logged the O2 sensors and I can see the a/f ratio going rich and then leaning out as the idle smoothes out.

By using the ARC1 I'm hoping to adjust the idle mixture to where the ECU adjustment is not necessary or at least minimal. The adjustment will be additive, meaning the same amount is added/subtracted across all RPMS. This works because subtracting -1 @idle, when the MAF reading is only 5 g/s has a great impact while subtracting -1 @redline, when the MAF is reading 250 g/s has a neglegible impact.

more pronounced. The last paragraph really sums up what you are hoping to do with the arc1, sounds like it'll work.

Good luck meng.
