Pics of your engine stuff.
Wish I had a happier one handy but I don't.

I have about 30,000 miles to ponder if I want to tackle mine myself or not.
The description in the Bently manual looks daunting.
I don't know anything about the 3.0, but if it's anything like the 2.8, it's not that bad. I took my time and did it over a weekend. The toughest part was removing fan (didn't have the special tool).

camshafts and crank in position?
That's what the Bently manual shows. You have to strip the engine down to exposed camshafts and lock them in place with special tools. Then there's a locking pin of some variety you screw in the block (I'm assuming it holds the crank still).

I'd post diagrams but don't have the manual installed on this PC.
Manual shows these two C-shaped clamps that go between the cams on each bank.
Also, is there enough room to work if you just slide the radiator carrier forward on the support pins or must you disassemble the front of the car?
attach a bar between both cam's to lock them at top dead center. There is a write up in the FAQ's where someone made their own. I was careful with my tb change and did not use any vag special tools.

from moving. You really need to pop the gears off to fit the new belt PROPERLY. Otherwise, you run the risk of having your timing slightly off.
the cam sprokets? There is a set number of teeth of the timing belt between one cam to the other. As long as this is acomplished, the timing will be correct; Any movement will be corrected by the spacing of the belt teeth upon rotation. The cam's are also key'ed so the timing should be the same if you pop them off or not. Please enlighten me as to why you should remove the cam sprokets to correct the timing.
PS. My car runs correctly/fine without touching the cam sprokets when I did my timing belt replacement.
Nice, how do you like it? I was looking at a G2 a couple of years ago, but I balked when they did not offer/have the DOT/carb certificate. I don't want the hassle of dealing with the smog cert every two years in California.

There are plenty of G2s in California. I've never heard of anyone having problems passing emissions.
Oh, and I like the G1 very much :)

which hold them tight. The purpose of popping the gears off is to compensate for slight differences in belts I guess. It's the way Audi says to do it.
