I have a question! When timing belt brakes on 1.8T audi, will the valves hit the top of the pistons if so will it do damage to the piston would I have to get a whole new motor or just the head! how can I check if the bottom end is no good?

depends on the circumstances when the belt broke. rpm is the real factor here. only way to tell is remove the head. getting a used engine is generally more cost efficient.

Generally, the valves contacting the pistons does not damage the piston, however the valve stems are fragile and they often snap on impact. This means the head of the valve falls into the cylinder and gets mashed into the top of the piston on the next up stroke. You need to remove the head to find out how bad the damage is. Short of a crystal ball, there is no way for anyone here to tell you how bad your damage is.

How about if I would take out the spark plug! could I see if the valve snaped off

But the head has to come off eventually.

Now do it right. Pull the head.

If you can't afford to do it right, you own the wrong car. Buy an Accord.

BUY AN ACCORD??? are you trying to be funny or are you trying to look sound cool! IF you think accord are such a good car why don't you buy one!

It's really not that hard to check. All you need to do is remove the head. It is less than a days worth of work to figure out what exactly needs to be done.

If it is just bent valves, take it to a shop and have them test it to see if there are any cracks. If you're able to get it rebuilt otherwise invest in a new one.

If there is scoring or holes in the pistons you can also change these. Its not that hard, just drop the subframe and oil pan, remove the tranny and you'll have plenty of room to work with.

I've been there and it is worth doing it right and nothing feels better than knowing that your engine built for whatever you throw at it.

Live, Learn, let be. I have some left over head parts if you're interested.

that our beloved audi's require, I've done my timing belt 3 times now on my a4 in less than 3 years. but i do drive a LOT.

every 60k for me.

If you broke the belt you damaged at least some of the valves no doubt.

If your lower end is good you won't know until you actually pull the head.

Don't even think ok trying to look through the spark plug holes.

BTW, Joey is a VW/Audi tech and knows his sh^t.

and I have not seen one single one snap a valve.. Even ones going 100mph when the belt went.

Sure it can happen but its very far from common on these motors.

I do agree at later comments that the only way to tell is to pull the head.

I always, when doing jobs at my shop not the dealer where they just put heads on, do all the exhaust valves and the center intake valves along with all of the lifters.. Even if they look like there was no damage they usualy are bent a hair.

Outer intake valves I have never seen hit.
