View Full Version : ECS Stage 4 - upside down?

Hi there, wonder if anyone can shine any light on the following.
I have popped over from RS246 following a bit of a debate about Brembo calipers (Porsche Cayenne or ECS stage 4s) and the fitting of to a B5 S4.

It appears that the caliper is designed for a front mounted location when used on a Porsche vehicle and the S4 is a trailing mounted caliper. When mounted in this way the pots of the caliper are in the incorrect order - the smallest one should apparently be "first" rather than in last position, which can lead to some interesting pad wear problems and possibly a reduction in performance.

The solution appears to be to change the caliper configuration around by swapping the equaliser pipe with the bleed nipples.

I have been in touch with ECS via email earlier today and they say no problem.
A guy who deals with Brembos on a daily basis says they're wrong.
Stasis calipers from pictures I see present the smallest piston first in line.
B7 RS brakes are also presented in this configuration.

Who exactly is correct and has anyone encountered issues with ECS in standard configuration.

Any help appreciated as I am looking to mount my ECS at some stage and dont want to end up with an injured (or worse) family because they are incorrectly fitted - you just cant mess about with brakes.

To avoid horrible pad taper wear, the rotor absolutely must see the smallest piston first (see this <a href="http://forums.audiworld.com/brakes/msgs/3015.phtml">Alcon Discussion</a>). You definitely cannot mount a LH caliper in the RH position and visa versa. But as you said, if you just rotate a caliper around the rotor from the leading to trailing mount position, although the pistons are in the proper order, the plumbing isn't.

I took a quick look at the <a href="http://www.hrpworld.com/client_images/ecommerce/client_39/cat_header/658_1.pdf">2007 Brembo Catalog</a> (9 mb, 173 page pdf). Some of the calipers list the same part number for leading and trailing mount, some list different part numbers. I don't know which of the 6-pot calipers is used on the Porsche Cayenne, but I can imagine an internal configuration where complete bleeding of air out of the caliper is impossible if the caliper is mounted up-side-down with the external plumbing swapped.

You're correct, "<i>you just can't mess about with brakes</i>" ... I strongly recommend that you contact Brembo technical service directly.

Just reading that guide it would appear that ECS are indeed sending these calipers out in the wrong configuration for use on a S4 B5 (and possibly others with a trailing mounting point)

From the bottom of Page 4 of the Brembo documentation:

b. Mount the caliper onto the knuckle such that the arrow marked on the inner half-caliper
corresponds to the forward direction of rotation of the brake disc (the disc must enter the
caliper through the side corresponding to the smaller piston and exit through the other side
corresponding to the larger piston).
