View Full Version : Crazy, maybe. But I am going to convert my allroad to a conventional sport suspension.

I am just starting the research to figure this out. The most important thing of course is that I verify that the 'hard points' are the same as an A6 Avant. I am thinking about borrowing a take off A6 suspension from a local audiworlder that I can test fit before I sink money into parts.

Assuming that there is no major difference in hard points I have the next problem of what fitment to use. Effectively I am creating an A6 2.7T 6MT Avant. Unfortunately there is no such car (at least in the US) so there is no fitment for a suspension for one. I will have to choose a suspension for either a A6 2.8 Avant, A6 2.7T sedan, or S6 Avant. Which do you think is most similar suspension-wise to my 2.7T Avant?

Since I am not buying a suspension 100% designed for my car I am thinking that the more adjustability I have the better. Coilovers are at the top of my list so that I can tune the height and hopefully the damping.

I am assuming I should consider H&R, KW, and Vogtland. Any comments on which you think would be better for this project? Any other setups to consider?

I guess I'll have to give up doing this, but that's OK. I've had my fill and really want to have my daily driver handle much better.

lets examine the differences between the AR and the standard A6 or A6 4.2.. for the front of the car....

subframe... AR speciffic
Lower control arms (4).... AR speciffic
upper control arms 8e0-A setup... same as A6.
Upper control arm bracket... AR speciffic
steering knuckles... AR speciffic

that is just preliminary stuff... there might be more stuff that is different.

I'm not sure what this would do to your dampening... The shock isnt attached right at the outter ball joint but rather about 70% of the way out... so the dampeners are set to compensate for the shorter range of motion provided by that further in board pivot point. I dont know how far in or out the shock mounts to the straight arm...

I wish I had a C5 A6 to compare it too but I'll have to use the ETKA and Bentley to compare. You highlighted that some parts are different (control arms) but I'm wondering if there is the possibility that they are different part numbers, but perhaps same dimension. I.e. is it possible that the allroad got heavier components for offroading but geometry is the same?

I ahve much research to do.
