View Full Version : Puffs of smoke from exhaust

A few weeks ago a friend was following me, and told me, "you know, your car blows a puff of smoke when you accelerate off the line." I didn't think much of it since I remember seeing 2.0Ts at the dealer blowing puffs of smoke when they were started up, and my 3.2 has also done that from day one.

However, last night, I was driving on the interstate and some guy was right on my tail, so I wanted to get in front of some cars and out of the lane. I floored it and for 4-5 seconds, I watched in my rear view mirror as my car blew smoke the entire time.

I tried it a couple more times and noticed that whenever I go over about 6k RPM, the car blows smoke.

Is there any explanation for this? Is it "normal" for FSI engines? I believe I've seen 2.0Ts on the road blowing smoke, so I'm beginning to think there might be a pattern.

The only time my old 1.8T blew a little smoke was after about 75K miles at full throttle (APR chip too). I figured it was just some carbon deposits on the cat that had come loose as nothing ever happened again afterwards. If your car continues to do this then you have a problem as my current 2.0T with APR has never done this in the last 30K miles. Does your car use much oil? Any strange valve train noises under the hood? If it's still under warranty, then I'd take it back to the dealer and ask a few questions..How many miles do you have on the vehicle?

Ncik

Currently at 24k miles and one month before my lease ends. I was thinking about buying it but not sure if I want to deal with this sort of issue.

If it's using that much oil and your blowing that kind of smoke, I personally wouldn't recommend buying the lease out...

Since the car is under warranty I'd take it up with the dealer.

but I never heard them say anything about "using" oil. I drive a A4 2.0T as well and although the exhaust tips are black my oil level stays pretty much in the middle of the hash marks.

If so, it could just be carbon burn off. Which would still be wierd since the car shouldn't run rich, which causes the buildup.

My friend's mom used to have a'76 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 455ci (or 454?) engine, and when she stepped hard on the gas it would blow a black cloud out the back like a James Bond Smoke Screen.
She drove that car like the old lady she was, but it was capable of laying rubber for an entire block.

That is more tahn a little too much to burn. I ahd my oil changed at 15,000 miles it is now 24,700 and still not down one third to the add line.
