I have a 2005.5 2.0T, manual 6, quattro with ~20k miles on it. Lately I have been driving it harder and I noticed that I had a problem downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. It is kind of dangerous - going into a turn, trying to downshift and the 2nd just does not want to get in.
I did some more investingation and it looks like when you pull the shifter harder towards you it cannot get into the 2nd gear slot. If I just gently pull it, it goes right in. Now, "harder" does not mean a crashig force, even my wife noticed the problem. It is more profound at the turns when there are a lot of lateral forces and it is difficult to control the pressure applied to the shifter.

The rest of the gears seem OK, it is just 2nd that gives me grief.

Does anyone have a similar experience? Anyone consulted Audi?

I had a hard time shifting into third gear becuase the syncro-mesh wasnt workign properly for some reason...It was a factory default.

Anyway, the same thing happened to me, i couldnt shift into it hard, only when i slid it in gently did it grab. The third gear synco finally broke and i took it to audi. I got a new transmission under warrenty so that was all good! This happened at about 3000-5000k miles.

If you have anymore questions, just shoot

I guess that could work but you shouldnt HAVE to rev match everytime you want to downshift

I though Audi used synchro-mesh...:)

It seems to me that it is more related to the plate with the slots rather than the gearbox itself.

Then you'll see what hard to find the gear really means, lol
