service rep just called and said the factory rep looked at the car and yes the tires are worn but they cant pin it on the fact that the worn tires broke the 3rd gear syncro and they are replacing the clutch along with the tranny..

Inside? Outside? Evenly? Are they checked from time to time visually?

Quoted from page 6 of my warranty manual.

Among MANY limitations.....

"damage or malfunction resulting from the use of the vehicle in competitive events"

Now, you say you had the problem before the event and that you don't "abuse" your car, and I'm willing believe you.

Unfortunately, if your car shows "signs of abuse", you'll have to convince the dealer and AOA of that if you want them to cover it.

Life in the fast lane can get expensive.

As you mentiond, you took your car to an event put on by the Audi club.

If your front right tire is worn out from driving around counter clockwise, there is no way Audi is going to cover this. The car is fairly front end heavy and prolonged driving going around in circles will wear out one of the front tires.

Weren't there a lot of issues with the third gear grind?

I'd be calling up AOA to ask them to dig up this information as they should have it and get the details to them.

But yes, trying to associate worn tires to a third gear issue/abuse is just wrong.

There's no recall or anything formal that I recall seeing regarding to the third gear problem but it's been discussed before.

and Audi said they weren't replacing it , b/c the sleave was 'mangled' but they took it apart and determined it wasn't my fault. It was in 3rd gear at highway speed. Let me know.
