You can do ok at it for awhile, but I wouldn't do it as a career.

There's only so much you can make, and even if you work up the ranks to sales manager, it's a TON of hours.

I've done it, and it's ok for a couple years. but I would have lost my mind by now if I'd made it a cereer =o)

Depends where you are at in your life. If you are young and single it can be fun, but as mentioned before there is not much for advancement and the hours can be long.

Obviously working at a highline dealer (i.e. Audi, BMW, Porsche, etc) is a lot different than others and these salesman typically get more respect.

I have to say that I have been very, very lucky since I came into this business.
I now work in a Top dealership and absolutely love it.
I've been there for about 4 years now and 6 years as a Audi Brand Specialis (ABS).
The President of the company used to be a car sales guy and knows what we go through so he really takes care of us.
Our hours are very good and we have a day off during the week plus sunday. (Tx law...open sunday or saturday, but not both days.)
He has not fired any one since I've been there.
We have very little turn over and most of us have been with Audi over 4 years.
My boss has been with Audi for 14 years and some of my colleagues as well!
It all depends on the camaraderie, but here, we all help each other and we don't "skate" on each other; there are only 6 of us.
Where I work, they actually require 5 years sales experience OR a college degree.

Unfortunately not all dealerships are like this and do not all believe in the product. We do.
We are all pretty much Audi guys.
Our company also sells Porsche (in the same building for now, but the new dealership is being built right now), Ferrari/ Maserari (accross the street), VW (about 10 miles) and we just acquired Lamborghini.
We really take care of our clients as well.

Again, as I said, I've been lucky; I've been doing it for 6 years and so far, still loving it, plus with what Audi has coming...oh yeah!!
