Don't have any kids or any dogs, so is there any point in baying an Avant??

are you PLANNING on any of the above? even with dog or kid you can still use a sedan perfectly well.

avants handle great too but not as well as the sedans.

etc...
oh and if you are still single, the sedan is preferable if you are looking for what is at the bottom of my sig.

so the fact that the Avants have a better weight distribution than the Sedans is irrelevant... right?

i guess that porsche, lambo, ferrari, and aston don't make avants b/c they don't look as cool. they'd obviously handle better as wagons...or by putting a 200lb weight in the rear for better weight distribution.

Motor Trend tests both in Michigan and in Southern California. The friction coefficients of the two skid pads are slightly different. Also, seasonal climate changes result in different friction coefficients on the Michigan skid pad. The only way to accuraely compare the two is to compare them at the same facility, with the same tires and during similar climates.

Also, were they both the same transmission? It's not accurate to compare a 6 speed where the driver can control the rpm's to an auto where the driver can not control the rpm's.

That's why reading on AW is such a pain because people post without learning or understanding below the surface. What you see isn't always what you get.

they were both manual. pics showed dry conditions in both articles. extremes conditions will affect things but not in this case.

does that mean that you cannot compare the manufacturer 0-60 times for the M5 and RS6 because the companies used different tracks to average out and achieve a final published figure?

with regards to altitude, tire brand, miles on tires, proper tire rotation history, weight of drivers, wind direction, wind speed, type of track, composition of track, amount of gas in car, brand of gas in car, brand of testing equipment used, option levels of each car, what CD was playing, what color the cars were, whether or not the drivers were in a good or bad mood or got laid the night before, or the avant driver didn't try as hard because he/she has a personal vendetta against avants, etc... i don't have a f****g clue. what about you?

Sorry. I guess all those years I helped a different car mag taught me nothing. BTW, this mag only tested at one facility, and always published the conditions as part of their test data. I can't believe I didn't anything more from all those engineers I've worked with.

all i was asking you was to justify your claim that the Sedan had a better handling than the Avant...
it's one thing to make statement, another to justify them... why don't you just try to do both next time???

beside, you were talking about <i>handling</i> right? since when going in a straight line has anything to do w/ handling??? strip time are meaningless as far as handling is concerned... you know not all of us are taking our cars to the strip to see what it does to the 1/4 mile... no most of us actually use them as daily driver, you know, going to work, to the movies, grocery shopping and so on...

now you're talking about Porsche, Ferrari and the likes... how can you even compare these to the A4? these are sport cars, since when the A4 is a sport car? true if you want a sport car with great handling capabilities go get one from the brand listed above... what kind of comparison is that?

i'm gonna guess you're over in Europe... so "rarity" doesn't really factor in there...

it's a tough call... i don't have dogs or kids, yet i got a phat one... i just loved the shape of the Avant, plus over here they're so few of them... most people buy Sedans...

the one thing i really like about the Avant is the cargo space, a Sedan can't beat that - period.

i'm not trying to sound like i know everything. i'm sure you know a great deal.

or perhaps you're a Costco shopper and you've discovered you can't easily fit bulk toilet paper in an A4 trunk without busting open the packaging...

an Avant is a mini-SUV.
