I was wondering if any of you guys changed the timing belt for our cars? I have over 80000 miles and the dealer suggested that I change it after 70000 miles?

I don't know what my dealer was talking about then. I guess there's nothing to be replaced after 70000 miles? I already asked this question but noone seems to know. Well, thanks for your input. steveAZ 02-26-2008, 01:10 PM DrGP 02-26-2008, 04:23 PM the timing CHAIN needs to be replaced at 70K. Timing belt chain TENSIONERS actually MAY need to be replaced. slvs4 02-26-2008, 05:19 PM Thanks. I guess I'll just have to discuss more with my dealership to see how much it costs and if I DO NEED to change the parts.. because recently, my engine began to make some sort of whining noise.. very quiet, but it's still there. Anyways, thanks for your input. s4for5_TTfor2 02-26-2008, 05:23 PM 75k gets a serpentine belt for the generator, not a timing belt, chain, or tensioner Kenny 02-26-2008, 07:45 PM Kenny 02-27-2008, 01:22 AM DrGP 02-27-2008, 04:55 AM Most likely cause is the pulleys. There was a TSB for this on the 04 B6s. I had my pulleys and tensioners replaced twice to get rid of the whine. Characteristically, the whine disappears around 3k and is heard when the temps get cold. Not evident in warm weather. It should be very obvious. The fuel pump noise is caused by a bad filter, it will also be a high pitched humm from the passenger side rear area. jsh139 02-27-2008, 09:36 AM And it's only present for about the first 5 minutes of the day when the car is started. I'm not too concerned about it. I'll probably mention it to the dealer the next time it's in for service. S4iowa 02-27-2008, 10:41 AM EOM daveak05 02-27-2008, 10:53 AM same with the V6 turbo thread in RS4 forum...others disagree with you. suggest you revisit your analysis and advice. besides, something about living in a glass house... S4iowa 02-27-2008, 11:02 AM 20lb is not really a savings of any significance stop being an ass Robert F 02-27-2008, 11:12 AM daveak05 02-27-2008, 11:12 AM in disagreeing with my stmt that Audi and others are once again looking towards turbo V6 power, you used the example of an old 2.7TT design in comparing weight to the V8's. you seem to be stuck on a direct weight comparison between B5 and B6 S4 engines. however, that was not the discussion, and never has been. it's whether auto mfgrs are moving towards lighter and more efficient turbo V6 engines, and they are. again, not just Audi. and you disagreed with me and others disagreed with you. kind of silly isn't it? who disagreed with whom. i think you were wrong in your V6 weight analysis and i think you are wrong here with attributing a "high pitched whistle" to timing belt tensioners. they don't make that noise. you are obviously hearing a different noise on your car. if you can't take it, don't dish it out. That could cause a whining noise when cold. Theres a TSB that applies to most A4's and S4's that describes a whining noise when cold. What it tells you to do is remove your power steering fluid reservoir cap. On a 4.2 s4 it's under the hood near the drivers side headlight. Pour in some power steering fluid until the fluid level is 10mm above the line on the power steering dipstick that says max. With the car running, power steering fluid reservoir cap still off, move the steering wheel from left to right until you see no more air bubbles in the reservoir, put the cap back on and check the level of fluid again, make sure the fluid level is 10mm above the line on the dipsitck that says max. Road test the car and check your fluid level again. As for a fuel pump noise. Very rarely do B7 s4 fuel pumps cause a noticible noise although it does happen sometimes. If the noise is coming from the passenger side rear seat area its most likely the fuel pressure regulator which is inside of the fuel filter under the car below the passenger side rear seat. It's held on by 4 or 5 fuel lines and one bracket. The way to fix that is to replace the whole fuel filter. On a 2006 s4 with under 50,000 miles it is covered under factory warranty. The belt tensioner on a 4.2l S4 is pretty reliable very rarely do they cause problems but the way to check that is get a flash light. Pull off that plastic cover that says "v8 - 4.2" near your front bumper. I'ts just held on by plastic tabs. it pulls right off easily. With your flashlight look at the pulleys and tensioner. Do they wobble when they spin? or do they spin straight? If they spin straight then the pulleys and tensioner should be fine. But from my experience with s4's with whining noises when cold complaints I can say 90% of the time its the power steering fluid level and air bubbles in the power steering fluid causing the problem and thats an easy fix.
