engine oil low light?? WOW.. put in a quart and a half, stick reads fine.. Is this due to the "break in" period or what??

I believe I've read Audi states consumption of 1qt for every 1000 miles is acceptable.

I've not experienced any excessive oil consumption as of yet. I have 6k on my new engine and 14k on the car. Engine was replaced due to driving thru deep puddles like a moron, but that's a whole other thread.

like myself have not experienced any oil consumption(25k miles). I contend that the break in technique is contibutary to oil consumption. Others disagree. Same issue plagues the new RS4s.

the oil level on my engine at around exact same mileage as you was same as when I bought it new. No oil consumption. My A3 is another matter though. Seems to burn a lot of oil.

this seems to be a hit or miss deal with the S4 engine...like Timmay, mine doesn't use any in between changes(5k)...others tend to go thru oil.

Timmay, really on your A3? What kind of oil consumption rate are you talking about on your 2.0T?

i have an FX45 and i get a lot of oil consumption as well. in 3500 miles, i can be as much as 2 qts low.

i have heard that this can be attributed to lower tension rings on some performance engines.

with respect to breakin, what do you recommend as a proper way to seat the rings?

experiences around the boards. In the 20k+ miles that I've put on the A3 I've probably added around 3-4 quarts. I think it was one quart before the first oil service @ 5k mark and then another few since. Now that I think about it it's not so bad. It's just the inconsistency of one person's engine to the next, including my own. S4 and A3 are clearly different creatures. I'm attributing the A3 oil consumption to the fact it's a turbo engine which seem to burn more oil than others according to some.

However, now that I see people adding lots of oil on this naturally aspirated RS4 engine I'm a little bit surprised. I never had to add oil in my V8 Touareg interestingly.

hmm..

interesting as my buddy told me to do this exact thing and thats what i did with my new car. i did the old run it hard and do a series of run ups in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear.

from a dead stop, i floor it to redline and then let off the gas completely and let the car coast down to a stop again.

then i do it in 2nd and 3rd (with a lot of space).

car runs great, but i still get a LOT of oil consumption.

I had a 1.8T that didn't use a drop, so I don't think it's a turbo thing. It just seems random, if you can believe that. Maybe the break-in technique is more critical than we might think. Who knows?

quarts of oil between oil changes. That's one helluva lot of oil. Where is it all going?

I'm at 13000 and thru the first two oil changes at 5 and 10K I needed about a quart and a half in between. After the 10K change it seems to have slowed down - there is still some movement on the dipstick but its holding in the acceptable range. this really worried me too the first time I noticed it
