View Full Version : So, is 6 or 7 feet viewing distance too close for a 46" LCD?

I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to go nuts looking at SD sports programming - primarily soccer - from 6 or 7 feet away. The set I'm contemplating is a 46" XBR4 Sony LCD. I'm having trouble finding a store that can show me an SD source on that set.

I have a 42" lcd where the seating is 9' and it's not far away enough to make a SD signal look good. it's not the the Sony though, and I don't know how the Sony does with SD source.

Although you could always take your DVR (if you have one) into a store and playback some soccer and see what you think.

I sit 15' away from my 52" and the footy (soccer!) from the EPL looks great, but when I watch at the in-laws on a 51" from 8' it looks like the famous Trainspotting toilet. It might not be long before footy is in HD though as that's how it's recorded now (assuming you watch the EPL). I don't know if you watched the World Cup in HD two years ago, but for a preview, ESPN2 will be showing the European Championships this summer and if it's not in HD I'll eat my cat.
