Hi,

I'm looking for a new dvd player for a Panny 50" Plasma.

Are the Oppo's THAT good??? They're close to $170+ while a typical upconverting player from Panasonic/Pioneer/etc is only about $60.

I should have bought a Toshiba HD-DVD player w/ HDMI cable + HD-DVD's from costco when they were going for around $80...!

Can someone recommend a DVD player? Is everything in the sub $100 range pretty much a commodity now? I just want a DVD player right now, not BD, not PS3.

TIA!

that $170 for an excellent machine that will most probably last you 10 years or more still seems a lot. $170 is probably your week's supermarket shopping.

better to watch on 50+ inches.

How many DVDs do you own? A great player may be a bargain compared to the cost of all your media.

If you only have a few DVDs, you might want to skimp and save your $$$ for an eventual BluRay player and media.

I've got an A2 still in it's box. Went BD instead, never opened the A2. I'll drop you an email.

Thank you for all the replies.

I don't want a BD player yet because I don't buy too many movies. I think I own less than 30 DVD's. Most of the movies I watch are rented. BD rentals are scarse here unless I mail order. For that matter I've been watching alot of anime recently, and that's not on BD anyway.

I'm ok paying for the oppo, but I was wondering if other companies caught up to the upconverting quality of the oppo. I was a little hesitant because it cost almost 3x the price of the typical upconverting DVD player from amazon/costco/sams club.

I guess it does have 7.1 out, but I don't think I'd use it in the near future.

Thanks again.

I was under the impression that the oppo was good because of the Farouja processing which the lower model doesn't have. Is this there a big difference with it?

I understand where you're coming from with being reluctant to buy a BluRay player. I don't plan to any time soon either. Too few titles, much fewer worth watching, let alone owning. Not much in the rental places.
I'm waiting for a recorder so I can record stuff on TV in HD.
I own about 30 regular DVD movies, only 4 or 5 of which have I watched more than twice.

Denon has since gone to another chip that is far superior.

Great unit. Only drawback I've found with it is most universal remotes don't have the codes. Our recent Harmony purchase negated that problem. Wish I had looked into them sooner. No complaints with the Oppo performance, though.
