View Full Version : Anyone with two houses and satellite TV at both places? Deal ideas?

I currently have Direct TV HD at the main house. I have a 16 month commitment. The weekend place has DISH TV and it is time to renew.

Direct TV won't give me the deal I want for two houses (a monthly subscription discount) but offers a $300 coupon book. DISH doesn't seem to care much about losing me.

I'm thinking I will switch to Direct TV HD at the weekend place which will require an 18 month commitment. In a few years I may just switch them both to DISH.

Reasons for Direct TV I see :
1. More HD channels
2. New customer, better startup deal.
3. New satellite that should add HD content.

Reasons against DISH:
1. Won't give "best" HD DVR to existing customers.
2. Less HD content than Direct TV

I/m not going to start carrying boxes back and forth. I could be wrong but I think the hardware and activation cards are married. If not I could carry cards back and forth.

I don't plan on doing hacked cards for either system.

Any ideas out there?

then I saw your sig! smart man! weddings last only a day, might as well go cheap and save the dough for important things.

at his home in NY and on his boat in North Carolina...and he actually gets the local NY channels on all receivers, even in NC. You'll have to install the equipment yourself at the second location....but this setup will work.

don't connect them to the phone line, it's no longer required. As long as you don't try to order ppv via the receiver it'll work fine (you can still order ppv online) and you'll only be charged $5 per extra reciever.

The markets are the same, the two places are about 80 miles from each other. The local channels are a match. I've never done a pay per view.

Typically one house is empty while the other is full, ie only one account can be used at a time. That is the main reason I feel I should get a price break. My car insurance company gives me a break on secondary cars but Direct and Dish don't seem to want to.

and you can suspend those accounts once a year for a time (for folks who have homes that are closed half the year).

But frankly carrying a receiver back and forth is so easy. One only needs the dish mounted in both places

I did say "weekend place"...maybe the keyword is "summer home" "ski lodge"?

for each of the TV...one time charge instead of monthy...oh but its not out yet :) We'll have to wait and see how it performs as well but it looks like it may work pretty well.

and they apparently they do...now I'm not sure what it looks like or how compressed the video is? Nor do i know if the Sling Catcher will support hd or not...I would hope so.

And you don't want to watch Slingbox on a big-screen TV.
