They seem to be consistent good quality in the case of Columbia anyhow. I was hoping that would translate into Blu-ray.

Fox denied that they ever even talked with HD-DVD. They were one of the larger proponents of BD's DRM. It makes no sense that they would go with HD-DVD.

Incidentially, the Pittsburgh-Post gazette columnist that first ran this story later edited his online column to omit all mention of this deal and the supposed payouts.

If it somehow makes you feel better, believe whatever you want. The fact is that WB execs hinted at BD exclusivity all the way back in October.
