...and want something the same size or a bit larger, and since Sony is now out of the RPTV business, and I haven't really liked the DLP TVs I've looked at closely, what should I get?
Seems that everyone makes 50" or 52" or 55" Plasmas and LCDs, but nobody makes 60" or larger that don't cost a small fortune.
Oh, and no front projectors - they don't pass the "wife acceptance test".
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

it still is a great tv for the price - you would have to pay US$7k for the pioneer for a better tv

best flat panel display I've ever seen period.
amazon, invision in seattle, plasma concepts, etc to name a few.
$6500 list but you can get it for as low as $4400.

...I spent on my current TV, given what's happened to TV pricing in the past 4 years. The Kuro, however great it is (and I'm sure it's outstanding) doesn't fit that bill.
The >58" screen TVs don't seem to have become what I would call affordable yet. Of course, if I were to buy a Sony SXRD on closeout, that might be the best compromise for now....but I was hoping to move away from RPTV, since the market is

rear pros and from the sound of it. the best bang for your buck. and the picture will be close to the kuro without spending extra, and the screen will be larger for less loot

CNET's #2 TV of 2007 and the only projecting in the top ten. The TV deserves all the accolades it is getting.
Sony will continue to support the TV with parts and bulbs for years to come.
The only reason they dropped out of projection biz is that the profit margins were not there. People are willing to pay more money for flat, hang on the wall wow factor versus PQ.
I bought mine after some haggling for $1620+tax locally.
For Sony the SXRD is more costly to produce than DLP so they are at a competitive disadvantage versus Samsung and Mitsu. But it's a great set.

CNET Linky

I got mine from Amazon last month (very good experience) but I know for a fact that the other two I mentioned are AVS forum sponsors and all those audiophile dorks over there hold these two retailers in very high regard and have had positive experiences. Even their reps regularly contribute to the forum. Also, Pioneer lists them on their own website so warranty is good unless you buy an Elite version (Elite models warranty doesn't stand with online purchasing)

use and B&M stores are where they feel they should concentrate their efforts -
If you want a regular Pioneer plasma use one of the companies at AVS Forums. I doubt that most of the differences in performance is noticeable.
