View Full Version : Aperion Intimus 422: will this work well with an Onkyo NR905?

as far as sound goes that is.

I currently have the 905 hooked up to some Onkyo 740 LR speakers with 4 Infinity primus surrounds and an Aperion Intimus S10 SW and although it sounds decent, I think I can do better with a better matched set of speakers. I've seen good reviews of the Aperion's speaker systems and since I already have their subwoofer (which kicks plenty of ass in my condo apartment), I am considering Aperion speaker, center, and surrounds as well. The only question is will it sound good with the Onkyo? Unfortunately, I can't find a place that sells Aperion so I could hear them in person since the company sells directly.

I'm thinking of the Aperion Intimus 422 LR, 422 Center, and 422 surrounds and rear to go with my S10 and Onkyo NR905. No towers or separate amplification unfortunately because I don't want to overwhelm my condo building and neighbors too much :)

If you are in the Chicago area you should have no problem finding a suitable dealer.
And if you are considering buying a new M3 to replace your RS4 you might wanna consider looking at ProAc's Response 1SC speakers for a condo. Upgarding your receiver would be a good idea too.

Either, try an avoid buying speakers you haven't heard. What's good for the goose..

Speakers vary enormously in character from one model/brand to another. Let your ears choose, otherwise it's like letting a stranger buy your ties for you.

and why would I replace my Onkyo 905 when I'm perfectly happy with it? Does the 905 suck or something? I think it's pretty decent for my needs... and I'm not dying to spend ridiculous amounts of money on super high-end HT stuff.

I was just trying to see if anyone here by chance might have tried an Aperion Intimus speaker setup with an Onkyo 875/905 or similar since I noticed a few have commented here about how certain speakers are well matched with certain receivers and what not.

But then I think HT gear should be #3 on the list of priorities when it comes to buying things for an empty home (behind a fridge and a stove - you can always sleep on the floor until you have the audio taken care of..)

The Onkyo doesn't suck, but it wouldn't be a perfect match for ProAc Response 1SC speakers, which are probably the most impressive compact speaker I've yet heard.

You might well like the Aperion speakers, but buying speakers without hearing them is a huge and unnecessary gamble when you can hear for yourself which are the right speakers at a dealer. You may end up spending a little more at a dealer, but that way you'll know you have the right set.

but my understanding is that aperion audio products are factory direct only and they do not have a dealer network. So my best shot is word of mouth from forums and such in case someone happened to have aperions with an onkyo at home tha they tried. Aperion does have a 30-day risk free with shipping trial policy which is good but I'll still feel better about placing an order for a trial if I knew I wouldn't be wasting my time setting it up or if someone already knew it was a poor match with the onkyo to begin with and not to bother.

Try to get them to send a 'broken-in' set if you can. It'll mean they aren't new as such, but speakers don't always sound great fresh from the box and can take between 3 & 12 weeks to open-up.
