The manual states that it has 3 modes for upscaling

Double Scale - Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.

Normal - Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.

Full Screen - Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image.

My question is about the normal mode. What do they mean by upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size. Does that mean for a 2.35:1 aspect ratio DVD it will somehow display it with no black bars on the top and bottom? How do they do this? Is it just a stretch and zoom function or something else? I notice in the other two modes they mention changing proportions of the picture to fit the screen but in normal mode they don't so that kind of implies that the picture will not be stretched or zoomed. How do they accomplish this?

black bars and all.

fwiw, I believe the Double Scale mode requires 1080p/1080i output.

Full Screen mode sounds like what some TVs (including mine) can do to 4:3 content to fill the 16:9 screen.

changing the dimensions. So, if your source is 4:3, you'll have bars on the side and if you're wider then 16:9, you'll have bars on top and bottom. By upscale, they mean your low-res material would be a tiny box in the middle of your screen if your monitor is a higher native res and they didn't upscale it. If it means anything other then that then I guess I won't ever get a PS3...Otherwise, the normal mode is the one you should use.
