Rubberduckie 10-09-2007, 06:50 AM If you like wide soundstages and pinpoint imaging. Great for music overall - it's what Totem build most of their products for. Great bass too, providing you are careful about how they are positioned. Up against a wall isn't ideal for example. Many of their speakers are quite a difficult load though (4 Ohm, 86/87db), particularly if you have a large room. Standard issue Japanese receivers aren't the best bet for bringing out the best in Totem speakers, despite many of them claiming to drive a 4 Ohm load. What amplification do you have and what are your room dimensions? Are you looking at any models in particular? Totem are a considerable step-up from the rather tried and tested yeat rather vanilla approach offered by the PSB, Def Tech's, and Polk Audio's of today. Totem are still using two or more drivers per coffin, but they use really nice drivers and tune the character of the speaker's sound to be appealing over long periods, rather than the jump out at you upper mids from the offerings sold by the national chains, which can be quite tiresome to listen to after 10 minutes or so. rbt 10-09-2007, 08:04 AM models vs. their standmount models. the former seem to offer better overall value w/ deeper bass response. of course if you already own a pair of very good stands, the higher-end standmount models sound excellent and still produce surprising freq. range. There's pro's and con's to both of course, but once you've been bitten by a panel speaker, there's no turning back. Rubberduckie 10-09-2007, 11:46 AM And you can really hear it, which is what matters most, regardless of whether or not any amount of X-over use is implemented. There are so many really good (and relatively unheard of) speakers manufacturers out there. |
