I kind of have my heart set on it and am looking to buy in a month or so when i get settled in at my new place. As far as i can tell it is one of the best tv's on the market, especially for the price.
Anyone have a better option for <2500 tv?

I'd buy from a store though, even if it costs a couple hundred more. these sets aren't made to be moved around the way jack of all trade shippers move them around. Plenty of people have done okay with ordering TV's online, but there's others out there who have different stories to tell.

Also, many e-tailers aren't authorized dealers, which means (regardless of what they claim) you don't have a proper warranty for the set. Check with the manufacturer before jumping-in unless warranties don't interest you.

Don't remember the exact model #, but check into it. Online prices were different from what he saw in store. If it's still the case, it's worth the $50 membership for a year.

120Hz, with the new Bravia engine, side by side the new model looks much brighter and more crisp v the 2000 model.
And yes i have seen the old models for that price

That really is the bottom line. Excuse the flippant remark, but it's simply a crab shoot. there's no right or wrong answer. Consumer Guides often say they are a waste of money, but they don't offer a solution if your TV goes tits-up.
My last TV (Panasonic 50" LCD) had the same problem three times. I was given my money back. Bought a new one and a warranty again. Both of those repairs to the Panasonic cost $1300.00 and they didn't wanna pay for it again. The new set cost me nothing, neither did the repairs, all thanks to the extended warranty.
But I've seen other TVs last 15+ years without a problem.

I just went with a 52" LCD over that same exact TV. As much as I like the picture it takes up too much space in the living room. And you have to sit in the sweet spot to make it look good. If you are standing up or at an angle these tv's look awful. You need to be at eye level in front of the tv for a good picture. Otherwise the picture gets dark.

I live in the city so I am used to small rooms so the flat panel gives me about 2 extra feet in my room and makes the room feel much larger. If you have the space and you want a projection then at least spring for the 60" to justify the depth.

It's a good TV but after much thought I wanted somthing that took up much less space.

My favorite TV is the Sony 52" LCD in 3000/XBR3/4/5 (any of them would make me happy) but I went with a 52" Sharp due to a much better deal.

You can view the SXRD TVs from anything up to 45 degrees off center without losing anything. As for standing up in front of the TV - you'll only lose *some* brightness if you watch the set standing up right in front of it. hardly a realistic way of watching TV.

Today's RPJ sets have a much wider viewing angles than before. You also get 1080p, anti-glare screen, less power consumtion, less radiation, less eye fatigue and no color fading after a year or so (plasma). That's not to say plasmas and LCD flat panels are crap TVs (they aren't), but when someone paints such an unjustifiably poor picture of one technology, you may as well hear what's not so great about the technology he's looking at brochures of under his blanket with a flashlight.

the new Sony Bravia LCD's look really nice as well, but for the price i could only do a 42". I want the extra screen space...

I like the SXRD but I can see my TV from the kitchen but I am at a 45-60 deg angle and I am standing up, with those angles the picture was really poor. So I had to go with an LCD.

Also I have a mid sized room and the extra 1.5 - 2 feet for the projection forces me to move the sofa back. Where I can put the LCD closer to the wall.

I am not knocking the picture, I happen to think the SXRD looks better then the LCD (unless you count the XBR5 LCD.) But that TV isn't even in my price range.

Apparently lots of geometry issues, complaints of ghosting ((due to the thin cabinet design), and a loud fan. I know, I know... every TV set out there has one of those complaint threads, but still... I can't imagine dumping 2 grand and having to put up with this...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=889226</a

My LCoS has an audible fan too, but when I'm watching TV I can't hear it because I like sound when I'm watching TV - it helps me understand what's going on. It doesn't have to be loud to drown-out the sound of the fan (it's not loud). The only time I can hear the fan is when the TV sound is muted. I'd rather hear the fan than commercials. And when the sound is off for any other reason, I generally don't actually need the set on at all. So I turn it off, where-by shortly after the fan stops runnning.

If you have five screaming kids running around, a TV fan is probably the least of your concern.

People were just reporting that the fan was louder than in other such TVs.

The fan noise doesn't really bother me as much as geometry issues. I guess you could buy one locally and keep exchanging it until you get one that has a geometry that you can live with. But as far as the ghosting, I don't think there is much you can do about it. Some people are just not bothered by it I suppose.

But complaints aside, I did see this set at a local BB and thought that the picture was stunning.

I haven't seen the ghosting. I tend to tread quite lightly on the AVS Forum as there are some people there with seemingly very over-active imaginations.

Apparently the ghosting only shows up on things like bright white lettering on a very dark background.

I find the occasional over-salted nut in a bag of slightly salted. Doesn't put me off eating them though.
