Agree with 4Rings that it's tough to pick just 5. I'd probably give you 7 different answers depending upon day of the week. Here's my Monday picks...
1) John Coltrane - Blue Train
2) VanKarajan/BPO 1963 reading of Beethoven's 9th
3) John Hartford - Aeroplane
4) Beatles - Revolver
5) Frank Sinatra - In the Wee Small Hours
Glad I get to pick 5 more next year... ;-)

Joni Mitchell - Blue
Bach - Brandenberg Concertos (o.k., 2 albums...)
X - Los Angeles
Joan Osborne - Relish
#5 was really tough. The contenders were
The Cure - 17 Seconds
Aimee Mann - Whatever
Richard & Linda Thompson - Pour Down Like Silver
The winner - Richard & Linda, cause "Night Comes In" would be perfect on a desert island.

The performance of <a href="http://store.acousticsounds.com/browse_detail.cfm?Title_ID=11360">I've Got the Music in Me</a> is almost unbelievable.
With good speakers, the imaging on Cohen's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Ten-New-Songs-Leonard-Cohen/dp/B00005Q45W/ref=sr_1_7/103-0905273-9827049?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182980552&sr=1-7">Ten New Songs</a> and Barber's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Caf%C3%A9-Blue-Patricia-Barber/dp/B0000634I2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-0905273-9827049?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182981139&sr=1-2">Cafe Blue</a> is breathtaking. Both have small club acoustics.
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Doa-Ancient-Beauty/dp/B000008F4U/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0905273-9827049?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182981455&sr=1-1">Ancient Beauty</a> is a casual listening instrumental ... with percussion that'll strain the transient response of the best audio equipment.
I'm showing my age with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Super-Session-Michael-Bloomfield/dp/B000002A9Z/ref=sr_1_6/103-0905273-9827049?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1182981720&sr=1-6">Super Session</a>, a '68 recording (now available on CD) that was included with the vinyl version of The Butterfield Blues Band's East-West, another great recording. "Season of the Witch" is an amazing cut.
