Pio elite VSX-91TXH
Onkyo TX-SR805
Denon AVR-2807

I can get any of them for between $900-$1000, and will be buying in the next 2-3 weeks or so (ie, no, I will not be waiting a few more months till brand X comes out with the next best thing). If you have another suggestion that is currently available in this price range I'd be happy to hear it. All of them should sound fine for my purposes. Is it just a matter of pick the least expensive one, or is one really better than another?

I appreciate any advice. TIA.

I suggest looking at Audiogon for it, you may find it cheaper even w/ S&H included (and no tax). Just be aware that a lot of sellers there charge about 3% if you use PayPal.

Just depends how important new features like HDMI 1.3 are to you. If you aren't too fussed by such things (I can't say I am) then you can get yourself a good deal on a discontinued model from the usual sources.

requires you to manually turn on the zone form the reciever.

unless they have changes that and you want multizone sound(speakers in your kitchen or deck area etc, the pioneer sux for it..
