I think a 76" screen would work or maybe slightly smaller. An Infocus IN72 would be ideal since it has a short throw range...was $400 on woot but just sold out.

Oh yeah, for a projector the room must be light controlled. If it's not then go with a 60" DLP.

the walls are white so I'm debating if I should cover them with black fabric until I dedide if I'm going to continue living at my current house.

This is JVC's version of LCoS (SXRD). There is also a 65" that is 11.6" deep.

Having said that, in a 10'x11' room, I'm thinking these are too big. I think 42" is the answer.

I've seen it done but it's only going to look good with a quality HD source.

For me it's just way too big for that distance.
50" is as big as I'd go with for 8-9' away.

Some of the comments I've seen on this board make me wonder how bad some peoples TV signal must be.

I've yet to see a set that betters them anywhere near that price range. In fact on the Sony Qualia impressed me more, which was priced at over $10k (retail) for a 70" only. The processor on that thing is out of this world. Minimal artifacts on regular DVDs. Very impressive.

My projector resides in my living room. It's a 96" diagonal image in a 12' wide room. And the walls are pale yellow.

Of course the best image would be in total darkness, and would be better still if my walls & celing were a dark color. But I am pleasantly surprised at how good the image is even in daylight or with the lights on.

My Panasonic has plenty of lumens to compensate for even a fair amount of ambient light. If one were to shoot onto a smaller screen -- say a 76" image, as mnkyTTR would likely do -- even a relatively dim projector would have plenty of lumens to light up the screen.

Of course the other issue is contrast. Ambient light washes out the contrast -- and light colored walls add to the problem. But if the projector is bright enough, you probably won't notice the decreased contrast anyway. (Since my LCD projector can't do true blacks, I actually think it looks better with some ambient light, because then I don't notice the grey bars above & below the image as much.)

I just find the reflected light takes away from the experience.

I don't think the size of the screen plays as much a part as the lumens on the projector. One way or the other, the light is being thrown from the projector. I would think a brighter projector would only make matters worse, in that there would be more reflected light competing with the image on the screen.

I dunno...in an ideal world, it's better to have non-reflective surfaces around the room, but for those rooms that serve a dual purpose, black walls = teh ugly!

A smaller screen concentrates the light and yields a brighter picture.

Sure, there is light reflection in my room. But the screen is so big and bright that it is an awesome movie watching experience.

Which projector do you have? Still have the old NEC? Or did you get something newer?

720p projector that's around $ 850.00 ? The 720p resolution will hopefully keep the image from looking "digital" since you're going to be rather close to it. I prefer a projector over a fixed display because you can play around with the image size until you've dialed it in. Maybe your ideal size is 54 inches diagonal...or 63 inches diagonal....who knows until you experiment.....good luck
