Right now I live in an apartment, so a small space. But a house is on the horizon in a year or so.

Would like to spend 500-800$ on a system, reciever and speakers. DVD is not required. HDMI would be a plus. Dont need the top of the line, but would like a good system for the money.

So, any suggestions, or more questions for me.
I have been outta the loop for a bit now and don't know where to begin.

TIA

Not sure if they yet have HDMI switching yet at that sort of price.

In your shoes I'd spend your budget on a reciver for now and grab a pair of reasonable speakers on ebay to tide you over until funds are available for the full set-up incl' subwoofer.
Gradual upgardes to speakers are cost-effective (because you can still use what you already have and just add to them) and very satisfying as you will invariably hear a difference with each speaker you add. Speakers definitely don't need to be new to be good.
Start with the heart of the system (receiver) being a new piece and just keep adding to it.

Otherwise you can go the HTiaB route, but when you want to upgrade (quite likely when you move house) you usually have to throw it out and start all over again. And HTiaB systems depreciate worse than a Hyundai.

It's a 7.1 system with a powered sub and it's quite loud and fairly clear as far as my amateur ear can tell. I haven't watched any movies but Call of Duty sounds great, especially ricochets.

I got it at shoponkyo.com a few weeks back for $289 shipped. Even though it's a refurb it included all cables and instructions as new. I'm pretty sure it really is brand new...downside is Onkyo refurbs carry a one year warranty vs. 2 year for new stuff.

the system I would get now would prbly move to the bedroom or some other room and I would start anew for the new space, and do it right.

that you can afford up to your budget max.

Great bang for the buck!<ul><li><a href="http://www.hsuresearch.com/packages.html">Hsu</a></li></ul>
