Perhaps it was the DVD I was watching (Braveheart) but I was switching back and forth between it and ESPNHD and the picture on ESPN looked much more crisp and vibrant. Or perhaps that's cinematic effect of the movie.

Anyone else think this is true? Or is it just placebo?

I was always amazed before at how my picture displayed DVD's... now I'm not too amazed that I've seen it next to HDTV.

Even my fiance has made comments daily on the picture quality. And she loves teh DVR function. Totally changes the TV experience.

HDTV looks worlds better than DVD. Unless you are watching a movie on an HD channel. Not many movies are recorded in HD.
