Everything looked fantastic as long as there was no or slow movement of the image. But as soon as things started moving quickly the image quality went to crap!
Why so? Is this a limitation of the compression? Is it caused by bandwidth limitation of the cable?
HDTV is never going to take off if this is the standard. It was terrible.

You can thank your cable company for that. HDTV should be delivered at about 19mbps. But there is only so much bandwidth available with all the other channels & subchannels, so providers compress the hell out of the signal.
But the Olympics have been especially bad this time (if that's what you saw), a lot has to do with the source. NBC currently has to convert from the 50hz signals used in greece to the 60hz for US broadcasts, which apparently is causing problems.
Wait until a good CBS football game is on, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Not enough bandwidth, hence too much compression.

and in dast moving areas the compression artifacts were very noticable
it seems that some people just dont notice it, but i havent seen a broadcast that didnt have bad compression artifacts somewhere
