View Full Version : Spare tire hold down. I'm looking for a part!

I have an Audi part on my Phaeton that holds the spare wheel and tire firmly in the spare tire well. It is a threaded bolt with a plastic spinner with a round cross-section fitting that slips part way into the hole in the middle of the wheel. The diameter of the hole is 2 inches. I need the same part but with a diameter of 1.6 inches give or take a little. Any ideas? What do the D3s use.

The part number is A40803899 with a plastic fitting attached by two snaps that reads PA 2. I assume it means Phaeton America 2 inch OD. See photo, it's the black thing in the middle of the wheel.

I just bought Bentley wheels. They have a center section that bolts to a flat round fitting that is positioned just above the bore hole in the wheel. The fitting has an ID of about 1.6 inches - which is why the fitting that is 2 inches OD won't fit.

J/K

First, the part number you provided doesn't seem to be correct. I think it's a: 3D0 803 899 A. Prefix 3D0 if it's a VW part or 4E0 if it's an Audi part. Is it branded Audi or VW?

Second, I kind of got lost with what you were trying to say with the Bentley wheels with the flat round fittings vs. round cross section fitting for the Audi. Is the B wheel essentially the same as the Audi/Phaeton wheels except it just has a smaller bore diameter (1.6")? You just need to get the correct tire mounting bolt with the 1.6" diameter fitting, correct?

Lastly, is the length of the bolt long enough for the B wheels?

Gotta get home to measure the part.

The hole it has to fit into to keep the wheel centered is 1 and 6/10th of an inch ID. It protrudes into it about an inch. Then the part steps up to a 1 inch tall hollow round fitting that attaches to the knurled handle. The OD of that is what I need to measure. I think it's just under 3 inches OD, anyway, it stays the stock diameter.

The actual hub bore on the wheel is 2 inches approximately. Unfortunately Bentley welds a fitting outboard of the hub fitting - to hold on their wheel center part and that is 1 & 6/10th with two little bolt holes in it.

I think the best way to overcome this is to make a disc (out of wood) that is 1.6" in diameter and then drill a center hole to slide the disc over it. To keep the disc in place, screw on a nut with the same thread pitch as the 8mm threaded bolt.

Another option: The disc can be made by a set of washers stacked enough to have a total thickness of a 1/2". Obviously, a nut would be put on the end of the stack to keep them in place. You can wrap the washers with electrical tape to protect the wheel from being damaged and to even add a few more millimeters in diameter so it will fit snug into the Bentley hub.

I was hoping that there could be an Audi part solution but it seems as though the PA2 piece would have to be ordered separately. Unfortunately, I think it is not an individual piece that can be ordered so the best way to do so would be to go to a Bentley dealer and order their hold down tool and hope that the thread and bolt length are the same. Of course, you would also have to take into consideration that the handle height won't be so high as to not create the trunk liner to be lifted up.

Another idea to the DIY would be to go to Home Depot and see if they have any 1.5" Diameter PVC fittings/adapters. Some (such as threaded cap ends) have flanges on them. Drill or thread a hole and this may also work. Lock it down with a nut as well. I think I like this idea the best.

If i come up with anything else, I'll let you know.

Handle height shouldn't be a problem - I can shim with larger OD washers above 1.6 inch ones.
