View Full Version : Help! My car's not behaving in sport mode...

After reading the thread that was started last week about whether you drive in (D) or (S) I decided it was time to try driving in sport mode more often. Unfortunately, the experience has me wondering if my transmission is in need of some TLC.

Here's what's happening.
1. Put car in (S)
2. Mash the gas pedal down
3. Hang on & make sure nobody is in front of you!
4. Big smile on my face :)

Scenario #2
1. Put car in (S)
2. Curse at the traffic Gods for allowing all of these people to own vehicles =)
3. Gently apply the gas pedal
4. Smooth shift from 1st to 2nd
5. At 2800 rpm the car lurches from 2nd into 3rd
6. Big scowl on my face :(
7. Make an appointment for a botox treatment...

Anyone else notice this, or is it just my car? It's going in soon to have the trunk hinges replaced (they believe this will correct the auto close problems), so I'm definately going to have them look at it. I'm going driving in tip mode today to see if it still has problems with 3rd gear. I'll keep y'all posted.

Was strange since the car barely clunked if you were gentle, or really mashing it. However, on half throttle it would happen.

Anyways, this has always been the case with me.

Face it...this is a remarkable car with a miserable transmission...my daughter's Jetta shifts better as does the wife's Honda Pilot...sport mode is better than auto but no matter how you slice it the tranny sucks and Audi should be embarrased to have it in this vehicle..it's nowhere near as good as the rest of this otherwise awesome car...too bad...just enjoy the other great features

I've noticed this misbehavior since the beginning and despite a reprogram during a service appointment, it was still the same.

That's why I drive using 'D' in the city where part throttle driving is the norm. But on open highways or country roads, 'S' works nicely.

It's interesting to note that none of the other cars that I've driven with a recent 5-, 6- or 7-speed automatic transmission (either by ZF or Getrag) has this type of a problem in 'S' mode. I just had my father's '04 SL500 for a week and it has the 7-speed auto box, and it shifts beautifully in 'S' mode whether in the city or on the highway.

This has been the only on-going complaint I've had with the car but I've learned to live with it. Gina, hopefully you'll come up with a better answer than I've been able to.

youda thunk that Audi would have done something by now.

I haven't had the clunk experience in "S." In fact, I find the tranny quite smoothe, whether I accelerate quickly or slowly. Hmmm....

posted so far. No problem. Smooth as silk in D or S no matter what my driving style.
Can't recall the auto close problem you were having but mine deteriorated to the point where it would not open the lid. It would try, but like it was physically out of shape, it would lift a fraction of an inch and fail. New hinges and motor installed and it works fine.
Good luck!

the only side effect of Sport mode is that the vehicles behind me rapidly vanish in my rear view. = D
