The driver side door had damage but the passengers didn't. The whole body slid back on the frame.

No, mine after it fell off the "jack" and rolled into the back to his tow truck.
you should have stayed with the vehicle.

made the crash a lot softer. You might have gotten out of it completely uninjued.

like the front portion should have crumpled. Aren't these cars unibody construction, not body on frame?

The whole idea is to have the front end take up the kenetic energy and disipate it.....and it's very important that the doors still open.
It does this by sliding the engine back and down....not by crumbling the front end....and as you can see, the doors, A, B and C pillar are almost in perfect shape....important to the safety of passengers.
And no, the body would not slide back on the frame because there is none, it's a space frame.

Not sure what happened if the body didn't slide but the rear end now extends beyond the tail pipes and the rear tires now almost touch the rear inner wheel well.

a car can be replaced, but whiplash can cause suffering to a person for years to come.
I am merely surprised that the accident that stirs was in, did not cause the A8 more damage than it did, and I still wonder if stirs would have walked away from the accident with absolutely no injuries, had he been in a car that had crumpled more.
