After 4 days of consulting with the Audi Service Hotline, my dealer concluded that the air filter element was torn allowing too much air into the intake which caused the MIL lamp to indicate a lean fuel mixture.
The receipt also shows two road tests and the car now has 135 addition miles on the odometer which is reflected on the miles in/miles out on the receipt. I hope they had fun driving my A8L while I had their 2001 Jetta POS. Something about the mileage seems excessive I'm too burned out from dealing with these guys to pursue this!
Arrrrrrgh!

Could they have written the initial odo number down incorrectly, maybe? I'm not making excuses, I'm just wondering if it could have been a simple mistake.

I don't go that far without a fill-up so I was suspicious. The service receipt confirmed my suspicions.
I'm sure I'm just a raw nerve ending about it right now!
I hope they enjoyed it!

Is dealership near an on ramp to a restricted acccess road? Maybe 20 miles on the highway to the next off ramp? Sounds a little excessive, but... More important, is everything else OK? No food/ashes/spilled soda/scuffed wheel/flat tire/wet or sticky MMI screen? If everything is fine or better I'd just chill. Let the monkeyman have a little thrill ride. Might help him diagnose someone's future problem if he knows how the new A8L is supposed to sound/run/handle/smell/operate. Maybe even help you if you have a problem later as now he knows how your car should run, etc.

A8 Audi parts are never in stock! Glad to hear your car is back safe and sound. Here's to 5,000 more trouble-free miles.

I have a good relationship with my dealer and they have their own loaner fleet. I would complain severly to Audi and the dealer manager. I had this for my recent Avant service. 04 A6

That shot was taken at Presque Isle, here in Erie--a 11 mile peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie late April I believe. Lots of boats, and tons of wrecks (~400) between Ashtabula and Buffalo (Erie in the Middle).
The loaner pic was taken at Geneva on the Lake east of Cleveland on my way back from dropping off the Avant for service.
Audi content...D3 is great!

Can't believe it was a torn air filter. Man, what an unusual fault. Very very lucky they found it! I'll bet you some dealers would look for that one and not discover it before the lemon does.

with a coat of Glanz wax, but this is a loaner...even a loaner can't be abused. Some dumb schmuck before me put a dog in it and put some scratches in the leather. I tried to treat it with my Audi leather stuff. Oh, the humanity......Schwinen...Greenie, you have quite the following, great posts!

One hour highway test drive at 105 mph + 1/2 hour city test drive at 60 mph = 135 miles on the odo - explains everything :)
