Tried to schedule Mr. Prune for his 5k oil change. There isn't an Audi dealer in town, thought the VW dealer could handle it, but they say they don't have anyone certified on my car :(
The conversation was like this:
"Sure we can service your Audi - can you bring it in today?"
Yes.
"What model is it?"
A8L
<long pause> ".... Oh.... sorry..... you'll have to call the Audi dealer in Omaha" <darn-it> I guess that's the price you pay for driving a beautiful, unique vehicle :)
Called the dealer in Omaha - a mere 60 miles away - can't get my car in until the 14th! After talking to their service guy, sounds like they don't see many A8's around here - doesn't surprise me. I've been here for two days and haven't seen one Audi yet. Although, I've been stared at many times by other drivers! I'm sure they're thinking, "What the Heck was that?"
He assured me it wouldn't be a problem if I have more than 5k on it when I bring it in. Is this true?
On variable servicing, that can be up to 19k, and up to 30k on some diesel engines! My guess is that the 5k service in the US is for comfort factor rather than any real mechanical need.

in excess of 30 mph however until he has his transfussion. :)
If you are concerned, why not remove the oil, filter it through CHEEZE cloth, and return it?
Looking over all these helfful hints just confirms again what a wonderful bunch of folks we all are.

I think the car will be fine for a few thousand miles. Chack the oil level. Add 5-30 if needed (Mobil or Castrol ) and don't worry about it. It's odd that the A8 requires a 5k oil change, and the 1.8T engine, which works a lot harder, is boosted and operates at higher temps because of the Turbo , has it's first required oil change at 10,000. Go figure. The first service is not about oil, its for Audi to quietly fix electronic mistakes and software bugs, which don't exist in the A4.
Drive home without worry, (unless the trunks stops working at 5,500)

the Rs6 has a change at 5000 and then again at 15000. ( Though I'm going to change the oil in mine every 5K...)

Thanks for the hints, I never would have thought of using cheeze cloth! LOL
"Don't exceed 30 mph" hee hee..... actually, the sad thing is that in Lincoln, EVERYONE drives the speed limit (I mean the exact speed limit) nothing like being in a pack of vehicles all doing exactly 45 mph on a four lane highway!!!

I'll still be in Lincoln on the 14th, but I'm afraid I'll be over 5k by then. With my MB, the service advisor was adamant that the car be brought in before reaching the mileage limit. I just didn't want to have to park my car for a week in fear of getting to the dealer with excess mileage.
btw - When this trip wraps up in July, I'm guessing that my odo will read somewhere in the 7500 neighborhood.

Despite my having a lead foot, 90% of the S8's runs were long enough to warm the oil up thoroughly, so it ran the full 19k each time on variable service.
The RS 6 doesn't have a variable service option, so I'm on fixed 9k intervals.
IMHO, letting the oil warm up properly before running more than half way to redline makes a big difference to oil longevity, most long chain breakdown is under heavy loads at low temperatures. I'm really going to miss the oil temperature gauge on new Audis.

after 1,000 miles. . . one did this to remove the small metal shavings that remained in a new engine. . . perhaps production of engine blocks has now changed? Just don't seem to hear this anymore.

But they usually stay in the sump and filter... They dont go back into the things that matter..Don't get me wrong, You should do your first oil change as soon as manufacturer recommendation, preferably sooner. But 1-3K miles after, (especially if you're doing mostly freeeway). Don't lose sleep over it. And don't go to ----Lube. THAT you'll regret.
