I've got a climate control question and I read 100s of archived messages with no similar question so please don't send me there! =)
Q: Are you suposed to be able to turn off the defrost by just hitting the button a second time?
Mine does not turn off immediately. I've got to go through the convoluted process of hitting "Auto" which then turns on the compressor and turns off defrost and then finally hitting the snowflake to turn off the compressor.
Am I missing something here, is my climate control broken, or is this a "Feature" which strikes me as just as inane as not being able to recirc w/o the compressor on?

I'm seeing the same thing

I agree completely.
I, however, just turn it off by hitting the minus button on the fan speed control until it "zeros" out and shuts-off.
One question I have is why does the compressor (snowflake) automatically activate when the defrost is engaged?
Overall, IMO the heating and air display is a real pain and poorly desgined. I have to turn my heat off, my air off, the auto off and the defroster off by pushing the - fan speed button several times until it brings the bar level down to the base.
Why could Audi just not have provided a single button which shuts the entire unit off with only a single push. What a novel idea!

Mine is the same way. However, to prevent a possible wear on the compressor by turning it on and off, I use the direction arrows to direct air either up, down, or in the middle. Hit the same button again, and it goes back to Auto and off defrost. So, it still takes two presses of a button, but it prevents the compressor from the on/off cycle.

The compressor activates in defrost mode because it will act as a dehumidifier to help remove the condensation from the inside of your windshield. In my experience, the inside of my windshield will fog up when it's raining out and/or you've got a bunch of wet/sweaty people in the car. By running the compressor, the extra moisture will be removed. If you want to defrost without running the compressor just aim all the
air at the windshield by hitting the up-arrow, and then crank up the fan speed.

I just hit the defrost button again and it shuts off. At least that is how I remember it from earlier today.
99 A4
Kirk
