View Full Version : Intermittent wiper behavior

When I select Intermittent wipers, it seems like the car has a mind of it's own. They cycle quickly, then slow, then on high speed etc. The selector on the stalk doesn't seem to change this. It seems worse at night. Is this because of the rain sensor? Anyone else?

Thanks,
John

When they work well, it is a really cool feature, but some types of rain and conditions really make them mess up. I wish there was a way to "disable" the rain sensor for times like that.

the behaviour also applies to the non-intermittent speeds too.

I don't know the exact code, but I did it on my S4 before (and then re-enabled it because at the end of the day it was better with than without).

usually beads away pretty quickly at freeway speeds.

May want to do that - the sensor drives me crazy.

control stick to the off position, wait a bit, and back to intermittent. Otherwise it seems to have a mind of its own when it rains, if it is already left in the intermittent position.

Then you have the four speeds like in the older models.

I complained about my intermittent wipers. I asked Classic Motors if they could bypass the sensor and they said there was nothing they could do. I wish they had half the knowledge our forum guys and gals do.

System 7 (Display / controls)
Adaptation (function 10)
Channel 1 (MMI):
Bit 8 (+256): rain sensor

All US models have the rain sensor in, so subtracting 256 from the value stored in channel 1 should do what you want. Typically I am against the classic "add 256" rules because they depend on the base state. So what you really want to do is clear bit 8.

I haven't tried this on my A6, just on my S4. I can't vouch for the correctness of this. Note that you need the newest version of VAG-COM and the VAG tool, one that can work with the CAN bus, or Bad Things will happen. I *do* have experience with that :)

They've already removed the seat belt warning chime for me.

I experienced this issue for the first time about a week ago. It was driving me nuts. Switching between the sensitivity settings on the stalk seemed to make no difference -- the wipers would sometimes still not wipe soon enough and sometimes go to full, high speed. I think it's a defect that the "intermittent" wiper setting is capable of going to full speed. It shouldn't.
