Just purchased a new leftover 06 a6 avant and want to add the Nav module for it -- dealer said they'd sell it to me at cost -- how much SHOULD that cost installed?
Thanks and really enjoyed driving my new ride home tonight......

...$1395 for the DVD player, ~$250 for the retrofit kit (aka harness).
Dealer quoted me $2600 installed and operational. YMMV, I've heard others say they were quoted $2200 installed.

The day after we negotiated our "deal" ($9K of MSRP on a brand new 2006 A4 3.2Q) we decided to add the Nav system. Dealer quoted a price of $2500 with labor. Seemed kind of high and I thought he was maybe taking back some profit but having it installed before we picked up the car gets the 4-year warranty on the unit.
Called a smaller dealer's service dept. and they could not even quote me a price, saying they did not think it could be done.
Overall very happy we added the Nav, it really is a cool feature. Everything works seamlessly. You just need to have the Premium Package and Sunroof with the color MMI.

$1725 installed by an audi master tech -- problem is it's 2 hours away and you have to leave the car for 6 hours -- no loaner as it's a down time private affair.

Because I haven't found a thread that describes a US person's experiences. And IIRC European cars have different MMI interfaces, and therefore potentially slightly different installation instructions.

If so, that's the first time I've heard that requirement.
If you mean the standard MMI, I wasn't aware of an A6 not having that. (Then again, I don't claim to know every option ;)

Where did you get the informaion that us-cars have different mmi-interfaces?
It would help when you can offer the parts-no of an us-interface.
With the parts-no I can have a look at my parts program to check it.
I think there's no difference between uk and us-cars and kufatec offers this navigation to uk too.

I just purchased a nav unit as well as xm. I will take some pictures and make a mini tutorial if you want. I really couldn't find any good resources on how to install it on a US A6.
I purchased the nav unit (no harness) from eBay for $250 and the harness direct from Kufatec for around $150. Don't bother with the harnesses on ebay since they are charging around $350. I have been quoted about 1.5 hours of work and I am expecting around that.
I also purchased a version 5 dvd from eBay for $120. So all in all I spent around under $450 including the DVD. I will let you know how it works. I should have everything in this week so I hope to have it done before the weekend and if everything goes well, I will have installed XM as well as NAV for under $800! At least I think it is a deal. I'll keep you posted.

Dr. will you be running the GPS to the antenna (meaning you have to run a wire through the interior panels) or will you put a little antenna somewhere in the front?

I have the OEM submarine antenna already installed so I wont have to run one. The wires are already there.

Dr. so why is the dealer telling me it's a 6.5 hour affair if the wire is already there (which would make sense)?

My only guess is that they are also including time to recode the car. I have heard conflicting reports about having to recode it. Even if they do, it only really takes about 5 minutes to do so. I am hoping to receive the module today or tomorrow and then I will hopefully do the install this week. I will take pictures of every step. I don't know if you are comfortable doing an install like this but most of it is plug and play.

My understanding is that even though the antennas look the same from the outside, inside they are different. At least from the European owners who've done this, they had to buy a new Sharkfin antenna with both the phone AND gps antenna. Also, they still had to run the wire behind the panels from the DVD/GPS unit all the way up to the roof antenna and then plug it in. If it turns out that the US cars have ALL that already pre-wired and that they also have the GPS antenna then it's probably going to be an easy install.

I believe you have to run new wires under the panels and gut the sharkfin replacing w/ gps antenna.....waiting for the good doc' to confirm....

Just an update. It looks like the person in germany sent it via surface mail, ugh! I am now hoping to receive it mid next week. As for the antenna, I thought I read somewhere that all US a6's have the gps antenna, I am going in for my 70k service tomorrow and I will check with their parts department to see if there are two different part numbers. I should be installing XM tomorrow though. Anyone interested in a install guide for that?

Really, that's what bothers me the most. I don't want to rip up the interior panels to do the wiring. I don't want to start any rattles.

Alright, from what I understand there are two part numbers. One is for the Sat Radio/FM/GPS an the other is for Sat Radio/FM/GPS/Tel. So, every US A6 should have a GPS antenna already up there. I don't know where the wire lead goes to but I would assume it would be to the left compartment in the truck. I will not know until I do the install but I will again keep everyone posted.

The only other work that is needed is dependant on whether or not you have sat radio, if you do, you will have add in another fiber optic connector, if not, I am thinking that you can use the one that is already there for sat radio. Also, there is another connector back there for power, I don't know if this is interchangable as well but I would assume it is. Kufatec does provide a harness that adds another power connector as well as another fiber connection. I am going to have to add the extra fiber connection since I will also be adding my sat radio and thus using the connection already there. It seems pretty easy, you just can't man-handle the fiber cause if you break it, I've been told the whole mmi system goes down.

Alright,
After many days waiting, I finally received my nav module. Installation was not very hard at all. From what I could tell, if you don't have satellite radio and you don't want it, it is a super easy job. It is a matter of plugging in the satellite radio cables into the nav module. They use the same amp fuse so there shouldn't be a difference. If you do have satellite radio, then it is a matter of "splicing" in another fiber optic connection and running a wire over to the fuse box. The only thing that I ran into is that even though there is GPS in the preinstalled antenna, there isn't a wire ran from it to the trunk. I spent about an hour looking for it with no avail. The best option seems to be to get an aftermarket gps antenna and put it under the rear deck. I am working on getting pictures and creating a diy, but it wasnt hard at all. Oh also, I didn't have to program anything with a vag-com, it recognised the unit right when I plugged it in.

There was a previous post that stated after a week or so of the NAV unit installed on a US C6 A6, the unit went blank and the individual needed to get a simple reprogram done. Hopefully It was due to an old software version and you won't need it.
CONGRATS on the success cant wait for the DIY.

p.s. I was able to run an antenna wire in my Benz from the trunk all the way to the roof without damaging anything. Of course, we need to know what kind of wire we need. Looking forward to you DIY pics.
Thanks

Dr. I'm also interested in this and can't wait for the dyi. In the meantime could you tell me/us exactly what parts/model number... I/we have to buy?
Also, would a nav dvd from an 06 A8 work in this unit?

Hello all, I recently completed a DVD Navigation Retrofit Kit install from Kufatec on my 06 S-line. Here are some of my observations and comments.
My installation took about 3 hrs. and was "not" the walk in the park some would have you believe. You have to be extra careful while removing the wheel well panels etc. so as not damage them. (Especially the clips that hold the panels to the frame of the car which can separate easily from the panels if you're not careful)
After some research, I found that the Shark antenna that comes with the car does have the GPS antenna module installed but on mine there were no wires coming from GPS portion of the Shark antenna to use.
I used the after market GPS antenna which comes with the kit from Kufatec and attached it to the underside of the back window in the blacked out area next to the collision avoidance light so it was not visible from the outside.
You will have to remove the panel above the back seat to access this area. The panel is just clipped on and was easy to remove and replace once the GPS antenna was installed. (Industrial strength Velcro works great for attaching the GPS antenna to the window)
The wire from the GPS antenna does have to be run down the left side of the car through the channel next to the back window to the equipment rack which holds the Bose Amp/K-Box/DVD/GPS Nav unit and the XM or Sirius radio module. (You will need a 10 mm wrench to remove most of the nuts holding the equipment rack and E-Box fuse panel)
The new "Power wire" from the DVD/GPS Nav unit runs to the E-Box on the right hand side of the trunk. It's a single red/brown wire that plugs into the 2nd fuse block up 7 places from the bottom of the connector.
The main battery cable also has to be "disconnected" as well so as not to accidentally short out the entire electrical system while adding in this additional wire.
When power is restored you will have to reset your clock/date etc. on the main MMI interface.
The good news is the unit fired right up and programmed itself in about 10 minutes and the system was up and running. I would suggest before attempting to do this you study the detailed fitting instructions carefully, especially the installation of the fiber optic loop between the K-Box and the new DVD nav unit. It's not difficult but a little tricky. You have to make sure you get your fiber optic "input" and "outputs" correct or your not going to have a working MMI when you power the system back up.
All and all the installation is straight forward if you take your time and double check your work.
After completing the installation I can see why the dealers say it takes from 3-6 hours to complete.
Good Luck and happy travels using your new DVD nav system.
BTW - I'm using the NAVTEQ North America/Canada Version 5 DVD and it works very well.
Road tests have revealed GPS accuracy to be approximately 1 meter.
