When I play a CD, am I supposed to see the name of the album/cut on the MMI screen? Is this something the CD player is able to read and display?

Only few CDs you can purchase have the CDTEXT feature by default. Make copies of your CDs and make sure you tell the program that burns the CD to add CDTEXT information.

Alternatively, you can type all this in yourself, but I'd rather have a root canal done ...

If you are an iTunes users (iTunes does not support CDTEXT), you can burn the songs to a CD, copy them to your HD as MP3s (you can't burn songs to your HD from iTunes...and 07 A6 drivers...you guys are lucky with your mp3 players!). Then, use a software package that will allow you to burn CD TEXT (there are many...search Google). It's a round about way, but it works. Unfortunately, if you bought your music legally from iTunes Music Store (which I do), they have encoding that prevents other software from playing them.

I am not sure that what you said is completely accurate as I am a n00b when it comes to this stuff, but I do know that my 11 yr old burned a CD with his favorite songs from his iTunes library for a party and it works just fine in the Audi, albeit with no song titles. I also know that a CD I copied using Real Player works fine and it does show artist and song title.

CDs burned through iTunes will work just fine in the player but since iTunes does not have the capability to include the CD TEXT values, you will only see the titles displayed as Track 1, Track 2, etc...

Other CD burners (such as Nero or Real Player) that have this capability will encode the CD Title and Song Titles which will show up on the MMI.

Are you saying that the Audi CD player will play MP3's burned to CD? I thought it only played regular WAV files.
