I know that there was thread below on the 3.6L VW transverse non-FSI engine, and why it won't make it into Audis.
The Q7 engine is obviously longitudinal, and previously previewed the C6's 07 4.2L FSI engine. So makes sense that the 3.6L will be dropped into the A6's engine bay. "The Audi Q7 3.6 features a 3.6-liter V6 FSI engine with gasoline direct injection technology. The engine produces 280 hp at 6200 rpm and 266 ft.-lbs. of torque at between 2500 and 5000 rpm."
Anyone with specific info on this? There may be a move to change the std displacements upwards to compete with Merc/BMW.

to be used in a sedan since it hangs out front of the front axle. In the trucks it is shared with the Touareg and Cayenne - which have room to mount engines further back and still incorporate the AWD system. The next A4 is looming on the horizon and it will have the engine mounted further back than ever to improve weight distribution - which if it used the VR6, would negate all that hard work. Besides, the mounting and fitting of the engines is vastly different, along with wiring harness changes and a total refitting of compatible electronics. The scope of such a change would suggest that Audi abandon the 3.2 V6 entirely. Not sure they are ready to do that.

to bore size and production line design. It's all aluminum and has 90 degrees between the banks of cylinders.
In fact I think the VR6 had to be be seriously reworked to allow for the extra displacement, going from 15 degrees angle between the cylinder "banks" to 10 degrees, to prevent the piston skirts from striking one another. The truck versions are no doubt reworked for lower end torque at some expense of high end horsepower.
There are some serious rumours that some sort of forced induction may be offered in conjunction with the present 3.2 engine - perhaps sleeved down to deal with the extra compression loads.

http://www.autozine.org/technical_school/engine/tech_engine_packaging.htm</a

You just have to look at the position of the valve covers (spread wide apart) to see it's the 90 degree V6, not the VR6. The 40/60 Torsen awd system and 7 speed DSG are almost certain to come soon.
