View Full Version : Center Console Armrest Plastic Latch Broken

The Frau is unhappy again.

The latch broke on my center console armrest - you know, the one that houses the non-existant phone adapter for my non-compatible to '05 A6 phone. A replacement console, under warranty, is on order as I type this.

Upon examination of the latch piece I am dissapointed that Audi engineers allowed this part to have such a thin amount of plastic in a critical stress point. I am a design engineer, myself, and I would have used a metal die-casting instead (like magnesium). I am concerned when it is fixed it will still be susceptable to fracture again - and I didn't do anything to abuse it to cause the latch fracture in the first place.

I think I'll file this one away with the inadequate MMI mouse knob. My surgical precision epoxy job is ten times better than a replacement with the same flawed materials (see below).

Wow! Awesome performance, handling, acceleration, speed, and style - with cheap plastic knobs and latches.

Audi, if you're listening, I'd pay a little more to prevent this kind of stuff. Kick it up a notch!

John

PS: MMI Knob Fix for those interested.

If anyone has their MMI mouse knob come off, I have a sure fix using clear, two-part, 5-minute epoxy and a toothpick:

1.) Clean mating surfaces with rubbing alcohol - let dry.

2.) Mix epoxy and apply sparingly (about the size of a drop of water) to mating surfaces of inside MMI knob and same to console MMI knob shaft. (DO NOT DRIP ON ANYTHING! - Use wax paper or something to shield the area if needed.)

3.) Carefully press the MMI knob back into place with a little bit of pressure. If the fracture was uneven you must align the bits.

4.) Let sit overnight.

All fixed and better than original since the epoxy will hold up better than existing material interface.

Due to the lid slamming down frequently - no damping mechanism.

Damn thing. Mine just broke too. Too thin for such a high-use piece.

Mine broke in the first year I had my '05. The dealership made a big deal out of it, saying they had to get special permission to get it fixed under warranty. I agree the thing is poorly designed. I am extremely gentle when closing the arm rest now, and it is holding up just fine.

Console, Console, Cover assy, Black, PARTS KIT - Covers & components
price: $34.20

ordered from genuinevwaudiparts.com. it comes with both the latch and top plate of the assmbly - if you need the top plate and not the latch, mine is available - i just used the latch. easy 5 minute install.

oh, and i thought I should add that the car in my sig pic is my old A6 - not the one I ordered for...

Thanks. Is the install straight forward once you get the part. I glanced at the broken latch and the replacement didnt seem obvious.

Easy install, just carefully pop off the underside (top plate) of the armrest assembly that flips up - if you get the parts kit you'll see what's holding it on.
insert the latch and reinstall the top plate.

Replaced mine too under warranty.

Car is '05 A6 and broke last year just before the new car warranty expired.

Dealer never made a big deal out of it though said that trim pieces were only supposed to be covered till 12mo/12k miles.

I remember my old '04 A4 had the same problem of the latch breaking but never got it repaired till I traded it in.

I agree that it's poor designing of Audi since I broke in on two different cars. Now I make sure that I close the lid very~very gently but it sometimes just drop closes by itself.

To revive an old thread, I entered the part # and got 4 results back. 2 from the collision catalog, 2 from the OEM catalog. Are all 4 of these the same thing?

what exactly do u guys mean when u say latch ... is it the hinge part ..the back part where the lid pivots. Or is it the front release lever ..the part you have to squeeze up to get the lid to be able to lift up?

i have a front release lever thats broken.. is that the part # that was given

I ordered a replacement from Audi Parts Nationwide www.audpartsnationwide.com (located in CA). Cost was $89 then shipping and handling. They are very quick and have always packaged their items very well.

you should try http://www.genuinevwaudiparts.com/ I had the exact problem in the image and replaced it myself too. Trust me I am not good with cars either, anyways I remember being a tad cheaper. Its too late now but i would book mark this site for reference and they have a nice diagram of how are cars are built. I also use it to see if the dealer is ripping me off. haha

06 Audi A4 Cabriolet--how do I replace the center console cover? Short of taking it to the dealer, yet again, and paying an arm and a leg.

Thanks!

Shoot www.genuinevwaudiparts.com an email. He has a kit. It was under $40 I think. I just fixed mine. The latch was broken like your picture. Pretty easy repair. Very annoying to lift the armrest and have the contents dump out.

Glad I came across this thread. My '06 doesn't even have a release lever. It was like that when I got it less than 2 months ago. I'll need to get one. Oh, and the sun visor holder. It seems like those break easily too.

Yes, but the SunVisor clip is an even easier fix...And cheaper.

I remember it breaking from my older 2004 A4 too.

Bad Audi design and lucky if it is at least covered under warranty!!

Is it? I broke my driver side one within the first month of having the car and the dealer quoted me something like $100.

I would greatly appreciate any help!

Don't bother trying to glue the broken latch back together, because I had tried many strongest glues, but nothing held more than a day of regular armrest cover usage.

The only permanent solution is to buy that armrest cover repair kit as shown in earlier posts.

-I have a 04' A6 and the center console lid is broken. The "front lever" seems ok but the rear hinges are broken so the lid itself is disconnected from the console.

I would appreciate if you guys can tell me the part for this?

I'm having the same issue. Say this on ebay and looks like the right part.

NOTE: Just realized it says this is for the C5 platform. Don't know if it would also fit the C6 platform!

Like others I tried to glue my latch to no avail. Then I came up with an idea, the tab that broke off just keeps that side of the latch from dropping, so why not hang it with something. I drilled a small hole in the just below where the arm of the latch broke and then used a 10 cent mini zip tie to hold connect it with the frame of the arm rest, took a couple of tries to figure out exactly how tight to make the zip tie. Now it works great and it only cost 10 cents to fix.

Hah, first visit / post to this forum after purchasing a 2007 Audi A6 Allroad Quattro (3.0TDI) and same problem with the center console latch...

@MainlandMig - thanks for the breakdown I'll try a patch up job before ordering another similarly weak piece of plastic. :)

Thanks to,everyone for the great advice on fixing the A6 armrest latch! I found the precise part I needed at AudiPartsUSA (www.audipartsusa.com). They have a great part finder number, and if you put in your VIN, it even double checks parts compatibility for you. Got the replacement latch kit 4F0898173D1DH (this part number is for the grey interior), and following the advice on the forum, had the part replaced in 5 minutes, and it only cost me $65 including shipping. My dealer wouldn't have looked at the armrest for that price!

Wow, the price of this part has doubled since 2010. I would have paid $30 to replace it, but no way I'm paying $60. I'll try to either fix it myself (not with glue, but with screws), or live with it.

I remeber I did replace this a year and half ago and price was around @35. Just checked price and price is now $55.

I still have my old plastic cover in black color, with all tabs, if sombody need it let me know. In kit that you going to buy will be latch and this cover, stupid that you cant buy just latch.

Hey guys. I came on here to find a solution to this very problem. My 07 C6 Avant just had the latch break.

Going on eBay, I could only find C5 armrests from China and other more expensive options like full armrest kits.

Anyway, I went on Amazon and found the latch by itself for around $8 shipped in the US!!!

I just ordered mine. Excited to fix this crappy piece for a reasonable price. Now if I could just figure out that stupid TPMS thing.

Here' the link. ENJOY!

I wouldn't expect Rolls Royce quality for $10, but mine worked just fine. It's nice not to swing the console up and have the contents dump out all over the back seats anymore.
