Hi All,

I'm picking up my new C6 3.2 (Prm, Conv & Weathr Pkgs, Nav, 18" wheels, Pwr Sun Shade & Voice) in Silver with Ebony interior. I'm buying the car from out of state due to a buddy being a sales manager for an Audi dealership in another state whom gave me an amazing deal on the above car which he ordered for me.

My question is, I have about a 400 mile drive home all on interstate highway. How do I follow the break in suggestions with such a long highway trip? I know I'm supposed to vary the RPM often. Any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks

Craig

As you get a few hundred miles under your belt, feel free to use higher and higher rpms, but do so with gradual smooth inputs and don't stay near redline for more than a moment. Use the Tiptronic function to change rpms by changing gears. Avoid traveling at a particular rpm for any length of time (listen to music, and change rpms with each new song - every 3 to 5 minutes).

Avoid use of the cruise control during early break-in. Feel free to drive at almost any speed you wish, so long as you follow the above rules. Do not change the oil early, as there is a special non-detergent oil in the sump. The car will continue to get markedly more powerful for the first 10,000 miles.

The rings need to seat against the walls of the cylinder for a good seal. Think of it as sanding wood. Low pressure but high repetitions make for a smooth and uniform surface. You do need to use an ever increasing amount of force, so don't tip-toe all of the time. However, large sudden throttle inputs create hot spots and potential gouging.

There are some people who swear by a more rough type of break-in, but I've had very good luck using these methods. My Alfa has 253,000 miles and uses maybe 1/4 of a qt of oil every 3000 miles - and then usually only if I'm beating the living day-lights out of it at the race track:)

Congrats and enjoy the drive! :-D
