How is this for a bad situation? I am new to MA, been here about 9 months. I have a buddy that is a sales manager for an Audi dealership in Cincinnati. I ordered my loaded A6 3.2 from him because he gave me a hefty $2500 off MSRP discount. Well, I realised yesterday that in MA, VT and NY cars are required to have North East Emissions, kinda like California Emissions.

Well, he called Audi yesterday and the car is getting built tomorrow so they cannot add anything to it at this stage, so no NE Emission pkg. So, it looks like I'm not going to be able to take delivery as planned on late March because I won't be able to register the car here in MA. It looks like I'm going to have to order another car. Any ideas?

I've looked into buying a diesel but no new diesels pass CA emissions. That said, you can register a diesel in CA as long as it is used: CA definition of used is >7500 miles. Some people buy cars out of state and license them out of state until they have >7500 miles on them then register them in CA.

There are some problems with this route but it is done.

I'd suggest you have a look at the MA DMV site and see if there is a way to do the equivalent.

Ask your local DMV about your situation. As a dealer, we never had any problem selling new cars that we had obtained outside of CA (in tight supply, we would buy up cars from dealers in other states). Now engines that are banned from being sold new in Ca, like the VW TDI, are another matter. We couldn't sell those new.

As Santorin says, if all else fails, you could also "take delivery" out of state, register it elsewhere until the minimum requirements are met, and then bring it into the state.

The rule is the same in MA. Cars that have greater than 7000 miles the NE Emissions doesn't apply to. The problem for me is, I don't drive my car to work as I take a commuter train into Boston. The time it will take me to run up 7000 miles is going to be 9 - 12 months. I'm not sure I want to play that game for that long. Thanks for the suggestions though.

CA/NE Emissions is just a fee you have to pay in those particular states. Not sure why just how it is.

18. I just moved to Massachusetts and brought my three-month old new car with me. I was told I could not register it in Massachusetts because it did not meet the emissions requirements. This is a new car. What is the problem?
