This I a common issue as I have noticed on multiple threads but I am still trying to decide based on my situation. I am (of course) an Audi enthusiast to say the least and have owned enough to know the cost of maintenance. I have just moved to the SoCal area and am deciding on getting a B5/B6 S4 or an RS6. If a B5 S4 is my choice I plan on converting it to an RS4. The major deciding factors are getting a 6-speed vs an automatic and cost of service, but with the traffic out here the automatic wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. I own a motorcycle that I use for daily driving/riding so I am only planning to use the car in bad weather conditions or for long trips since my family owns homes in AZ and WY. I have been looking for a month or two now and can't make up my mind at all. I know the RS6 is a killer on maintenance, but as we all know its a monster of a car and really tough to steer away from. I was hoping that someone would be able to tell me the service intervals for the RS6 so I can judge the cost difference on various mileages. Also, any of those who have had experiences with either your advice would be very useful.

If you find a low mileage car with an extended warranty, then major maintenance will only include things like brake job, timing belt.
Dont get me wrong, it is clear that the suspension, tranny and other things are weak spots on this car. But really, you are looking at a few thousand $$ over time, nothing catastrophic.
Other longer term owners can chime in to disagree with me. I know that there have been some (in the minority) here that have had problem after problem, but I am not convinced that is the average...

A lot of it is tied to taking the time to find the "right" car and then being prepared to deal with the know issues.... DRC, Possible tranny, and let's not even think about starters....
That said IMHO it offers the best bang for the buck out there, and with a few tweaks is truly an everyday supercar... I miss my old RS6 daily.

there are 2 main lessons I've learned in my 109,000 miles:
1) buy an extended warranty to 100k
2) when the engine is out have everything possible done...O2 sensors, exhaust sensors, timing belt, etc..plus a STARTER
