on any car to replace the starter... but I guess this is RS6 so anything is possible.
That sucks man, sorry to hear that.

The extended warranty Bruce sold me covers this part as I mad rushed to the file to check. However; I think I'll add it to the list of things to do on the next certain engine pull to come for some sort of maintenance item.

I hate to hear the news for you and what it means for all of us.

not worth the excessive maintenance costs. I always expected higher costs due to the performance nature of the vehicle. However; some of the designs of this car result in needless operational costs.

While it is great when it operates, a lot of us will reach a "sad day" prematurely due to these issues.

the spare tire under the driver seat requiring the car to be lifted by two Sumu wrestlers and a height challenged lepricahn to undo a bolt, the brake would have been located on the right with the gas on left, and the fuses under the engine block, {insert your own line here}.

Good thing Audi had their top guy (tongue deeply planted in cheek) on the key placement design so he was not dedicated to critical long term design issues.

I really do love the car when it operates. This fact results in epic battles within me regarding ownership of the beast.

I can see eating transmissions and control arms but a starter motor at that price. no.

sounds as though driving an out of warranty RS6 is about as risky as a sailor just returning from duty in a town full of women with VD's--in both cases, you're bound to get into some painful problems.

...to cover engine R&R? That's $2400. Seems like much beyond that is excessive.

How can it take more than 10 hours to pull the motor, and 10 more to reinstall?

Are they a dealer? A reputable indy once told me that the manual says the engine must be removed to replace the O2 sensors on our cars, but he has had no problems replacing them without doing so. Maybe an experienced indy can do the job for you for much less $$$.

I'm keeping the car...did a fair deal with the repair....basically my car has new trans, new DRC, new O2 and exhaust sensors, timing belt, water pump, new fans, all new oil and transmission lines, new rotors and pads.........and I'm having my windshield replaced (all pitted)...

Just drive the nose into and it will undo the whole thing to ready it for service.

I know no such device exists but it would be handy.

Now would've been awful time to try to sell (or even worse, trade) the RS6 given resale values.
Have you considered picking up a beater (like a 1-2 yr old A3 or A4) to pile the miles on? Then you don't have have to worry about wear and tear on the RS6 as much as that can be your wknd cruiser.
