after just a few K on new Dunlops, blew a sidewall on a nasty pothole in san diego (we're 300 miles from home). audi dealers closed til monday, saturday now. roadside tows us to a bridgestone dealer who says he has tires appropriate for car on phone. my doubts confirmed when we get there, only have 2 x 95Y rated Potenza's. and shop manager won't put just put on 2 due to liability with quattro, etc. i wouldn't do that sidewall rating anyway.

bottom line: i can get any tires on monday morning before we leave town. what should i get?

1) Dunlops SP9000s (again. not thrilled with them...)
2) Pirellis PZero (Rossos, i think?)
3) Michelin PilotSports or PS2s
4) other????

I ran thru two sets of Pirelli Rossos, then decided to try PS2s for my third set after rave reviews about them in Europe.

The Pirellis were great on traction, I thought -- wet or dry. Also very tough: one wheel got bent from a Michigan pothole, but the tire was OK. Noise levels OK, could be better. Like all "summer" performance tires, they start to lose traction in the low 40s F. First set lasted to 24K mi; I replaced 2nd set after 17K mi due to sidewall puncture in one & second screw in another.

Less than 2K on the Michelin PS2s so far, but they do seem quieter. Haven't had much chance to test their handling yet.

My driving is pretty docile most of the time. I do cut loose occasionally, when I can find the right stretch of road at 3 a.m., but haven't had time lately due to a move etc.

Mine are 18" with stock wheels.

side-wall bubbled two PS2s 19"s, but understandbly due to the apalling roads around new york area.

But I drive pretty carefully, the bubbles came as a surprise, I really don't know what pothole did them in.

You need to be careful at Tirerack, and maybe other places on what you buy. They had two "OEM" tires for the RS6. The ones you want are 99Y XL rated. I think Tirerack had some PS2's that were not XL rated, which is part of the load rating which I assume could cause the bubble problem.

From Tirerack:
This is the part # for the XL: 54YR8SPORTPS2XL 255/40Y18

PS2's

so got the pirelli PZero Rossos cuz that is all the Firestone dealer ,where Audi Roadside towed me, in San Diego can get his hands on. we talked over and over about how it had to be 99Y. 1st set they tried to put me in were Potenza 95Y, as i posted earlier. so drove point home.

halfway home (150 miles out of San Diego) i check the sidewalls again at the gas station > 95Y!!!! after all that. when i looked at them before, i just did a quick check to make sure they were the right make & size.

from what i understand, from audi's perspective, i shouldn't be driving on these tires (?). now gotta get firestone to make it right, but here in PHX. wish me luck!

anyone else had a similar experience?
