View Full Version : Yes, it'll go 155 mph (includes reference to a legal way for this) (EDIT)

At least mine did on a recent night in a location which shall remain undisclosed.

To borrow from Bob Seger and Chevy trucks, it felt like a rock. I've been up to 145 before, and 140 another time (Bonneville Salt Flats), and of course it's a bit scary to drive that fast for someone who doesn't do it often. But each time is less scary, and this time I was able to determine that handling remains capable (for a couple of lane changes at least) & it felt like it would cruise all day at 120-140. The worst part is getting back down to 65-75 because after triple digits, it seems so S...L...O...W....

I guess I could be accused of being irresponsible for doing this, so for those who care, I only do it on straight sections of divided highways when visibility is excellent and no traffic is visible, either behind me or in front of me. When it becomes visible, I slow down. Thus I never end up doing it for very long because at those speeds, distant traffic arrives quickly.

I'm usually alone; once my g/f was with me so I asked her permission first. I would not even consider it with minors on board, or probably anyone under 25 or 30.

Aside from an aunt and some cousins, I have no family and believe I have taken an approach that virtually eliminates risk to all except myself.

Will I consider doing this in an atmosphere that's better designed to handle such speeds? You bet -- when it happens next year in Nevada, where anyone can reach triple digit speeds for 90 miles of public highway on certain weekends. Check silverstateclassic.com ... maybe I'll see you there! (P.S. I'm told their first event is the third weekend in May, followed by same in July and September, and I'll probably opt for May because it's so much hotter later.[EDIT:] Also plan to attend their pre-weekend performance driving school, which is required for rookies, even tho I have one Audi school under my belt...cuz the Audi school was not about going 140 mph. That's what the Nevada tech guy -- whose day job is with Carrol Shelby -- sez will be the top speed allowed for an RS6 with harness[es].)

I agree with you that it's very solid even at high speed. I just brushed 160 once, with passengers (who were all willing and urging me on!).

I'd like to find a way to get onto Millbrook's 2-mile circular banked track and see just how fast it will go. Failing that, places like Bruntingthorpe's 2-mile retired heavy bomber runway seem like a great place to push that little bit faster in relative safety.

And I'm sure you don't, either. But if that's your driving practice & you do it when there's traffic, you are asking for trouble -- not just from police but for putting the lives of others on the line.

Please don't tell me how careful you are or what a great driver you are because when there is traffic it doesn't matter. When there is traffic, it's not up to you anyway. Other people can and do screw up, but if you're going triple digits at the time of an accident precipitated by another's mistake, your defense that "the other guy caused it" won't count much with insurance companies or in court.

...where were you? Looks like a track, maybe, but I'm not sure -- and still wonder where it is.

You got that speed from an A6 2.7T? I ask becaused the instrument pod looks different than the one in my (U.S.) RS 6.

Impressive performance in any case, especially considering it's legal!

That's what being an Audi Driver is about. If you wanted to have something expensive and drive the speed limit, get a true people mover(like a benz or a bmw). Audis are meant to be driven hard, Horch himself did so.

Traffic changes everything. It means I'm no longer in control; I'm putting the fate of myself and others in the hands of complete strangers who may or may not know how to drive, may or may not see me coming, etc.

...if it's a really long straight, probably over 150. I've hit the high 130's lap after lap in my "ghetto" K04-powered S4 at Texas World Speedway (about a 2800' straight IIRC). An extra thousand feet or so (like at Road America) and more horsepower (like in an RS6) should be good for at least another 10mph...

Oh, and BTW, I've seen 180mph *once* in my S4 on the road. A stock RS6 should have enough HP for nearly 190mph (and a chipped one nearly enough HP for 200mph) once the limiter is gone.
