equals crappy heat dissipation. I could imagine this would almost be requisite on an RS6, especially if one is into very spirited driving for extended periods of time.

let alone the size of the casing of a transmission tough enough to handle the torque. Zach's hearing the same things as me, 3.0 V6 biturbo - makes sense as the 3.0 is a bigger bore version of the 2.8 that was turbo'd up for the 2.7t engine. I think the reason that the 3.0 doesn't need the displacement dropping that .1 of a litre is the stronger casting over the old 2.8 block (Cosworth Technology to the rescue once again!).

already supposed to be undergoing tests at Nurburgring. I can't see what other big show there is to launch at, especially given that Audi AG may launch model variants outside of Germany once in a while, but quattro Gmbh seem to keep their launch activities to their home market. Audi's show calendar looks like this right now;
12/04 - 12/14 Bologna Motor Show 2003
01/10 - 01/19 Detroit Motor Show 2004
01/15 - 01/25 Brussels Motor Show 2004
03/04 - 03/14 Geneva Motor Show 2004
Geneva looks like the most likely candidate (always a lot of Audi presence at Geneva), but who knows?

http://www.audi.com/com/en/experience/motor_shows/motor_shows.jsp</a

OK, so Audi could be throwing us all a curve ball here and might be planning to extend the B6 nose like they did to fit the original V8 in the C5 platform, but in all honesty why would they bother? The short V8 came about to avoid having to modify the noses of the B6 and Allroad, why turn that around now?
It most likely won't be a variant of the 3.2 V6, that's a VW engine and I just don't see quattro using one.
The 4.2 V8 turbo we know and love from the RS 6 is just too big. Modifying the short V8 to plumb in RS 6 style turbos and intercoolers would be dumb, it's a whole new engine development process as it is not the same engine as the long 4.2 is.
The long V8 was generally considered quite robust, hence being considered for the RS 6, but even then the block for the RS 6 is made by Cosworth as the standard block wasn't considered strong enough. The RS 6 uses S6 engine internals, just the block is a Cosworth casting.
The 3.0 V6 block is already made by Cosworth anyway, using their rolling die process. The reason for this is that Audi engines tend to have the same spacing between bore centres regardless of engine layout and displacement. This bores are just bigger or smaller depending upon displacement required. On the old 2.8 V6, Audi had gone about as far as they could without making the gap between bores too small, hence the 2.7T - the gap between bores was reinforced, and the smaller displacement lowered the compression ratio (same stroke, smaller bore). The problem with boring out to 3.0 lires was the gap was just too small to be strong enough. Cosworth's rolling die fixes this by making a much stronger casting with a much lower incidence of flaws. This allows both a smaller gap bewteen bores, but also leaves room for wider cooling channels, not necessarily needed for the n/a engine, but to handle the heat of a turbo version...
The 3.0 V6 turbo engine exists, obviously. The design work is done, the engineering is done, the testing is done, the engine fits in a compact space. Looks like an easy win, doesn't it?
As I say, Audi/quattro/Cosworth could prove us all wrong yet, but I still think a 3.0 V6 turbo makes more sense.

Yeah as if they would premiere it there of all places. Well it would be there before it would be at the NY or Chicago show =^P. It would definitely be a show in Europe though. The A8L had it's North American premiere at the LA Auto show while detriot got the S4.
