View Full Version : RS6 test drive video on this site.... S6/MCoupeDriver 10-17-2003, 07:35 PM I haven't heard that much tire squeal since the last time a Crown Victoria showed up at an autocross..... sure hope the thing is better than it sounds! 2.7tDallas 10-18-2003, 06:53 AM jatwrite 10-18-2003, 10:28 AM I'm curious -- what "site" do you mean? I'd like to see it if you have the link. (If it's the "Video: The RS6 v the M5" post below, I can't get it because a window tells me my "Windows Media Player cannot find the file" -- any suggestions on how to remedy?) Re tire squeal: Yeah, I hear it, probably a result of the RS6 being so front-heavy. But tires are easily replaced -- not a fault of the car. As for autocross, I'd be surprised if such a large/heavy car would do well. It's certainly not a reason I bought mine. But I would like to see the site. S6/MCoupeDriver 10-18-2003, 03:18 PM It's not at an autocross it's just driving (briskly) down the road.... I've autocrossed my S6 and while no FTD machine we did pretty well in the wet or cold. I would imagine the RS6 would do a little better. Maybe there's something really wrong with the one in the vid because it sure sounds piggly.

http://www.audiworld.com/news/03/stratrs6/</a

S6/MCoupeDriver 10-18-2003, 03:45 PM ...Thou shalt not criticize anything with 4 rings... you're right I made a mistake about the Crown Victoria, your 2.7 looks more like a Caprice, which incidentally handles better than a Crown Vic! CHill 2.7T_RT(toofast) 10-18-2003, 08:35 PM ...It was raining during my drive so maximum braking was not called on very often... While on the drive I was also a passenger (and a very bad one I might add) while Neil was behind the wheel. ...I made a few comments about conditions and such, but finally resigned to simply not looking. Let's see any Bimmer hang on in the rain. jatwrite 10-18-2003, 10:26 PM I've found it now, thanks to reply by S6/MCoupeDriver, but still can't get video to work...even though I finally got the RS6 vs. M5 video below to finally come on. With your video, if I click on to the Real option, I get a screen and the word "connecting" but nothing more after a minute, twice, and I have hi-speed cable so I gave up. When I tried the Windows option, I got a bunch of code even though downloading my Windows Media Player is what made the RS6 vs. M5 video work! Any suggestions? I'd still like to hear the tire squeal. (Did you know the Pirelli Pzeros came in 7th in a Consumer Reports comparo of high performance tires?) 2.7tDallas 10-19-2003, 06:02 AM try saying something that shows you have a brain in your head. It would be like if I just spewed something like this on the bimmer website... "Saw an m-coupe yesterday. why would someone pay so muc money for something with 1985 318i suspension bits on it?" S6/MCoupeDriver 10-19-2003, 02:30 PM I ment the squealing just going around bends. Sounded like the car ws on snowtires or something..... Why is everyone on this board so defensive anyway?... is any post that is not in praise of AUDI a spew around here? An honestly this whole BMW can't keep up in the rain us such a pile of houy... Granted from a standing start it's no contest but once you get to the first corner...please refer to Bill Auberlen at Lime Rock in the rain.... S6/MCoupeDriver 10-19-2003, 03:24 PM ...most of the part's bin stuff is off of the even older e30. However the front suspension is from the e36 M3, the rear is an improved version of the e30M3.... some of the ****chgear and cabin stuff is found on the 318 (which was a very nice if overpriced little car), but not the suspension. And not to mention the s54 motor.... So that's completely different that my comments (surprised comments) about how much tire torture the RS6 in the video was inflicting. The writing made it seem like it was some amazing machine.... maybe it's all straight line ability? jatwrite 10-19-2003, 03:54 PM At least that's how I see it. I have complained often about the price, for example, but I was willing to pay it because I wanted AWD and none of the competition offers it. The BMW racer you mentioned may have done well in the rain. I don't know why. I do know that when I asked a physician friend how he liked his new 5 series a couple of years ago, when the current series was new, he said it was great until winter -- and then it was terrible in snow. That has a lot more meaning for me than what happens on a racetrack, especially here in Michigan when it turns cold. I don't want to pick at everything you said because criticism should be welcomed here. Just make sure it's well founded and hopefully has some constructive purpose, like "how can I correct this problem?" To just complain repeatedly -- I don't know if you do that but to those who do I say "Get a life!" Alan(NJ) 10-19-2003, 04:36 PM Owning a 996tt, 996 C4S, and assorted M3's over the past few years, I can assure you that the RS6 is quite an amazing machine. I did not expect it to handle like a C4S on twist roads; I did expect it to be an outstanding SEDAN, and it is, in every way. The RS6 is not at all only about "straight line ability"; it is a remarkably competent and composed street vehicle over a wide assortment of typical roads. No, I won't choose the RS6 as my top choice for autoX, but neither would I choose to drive a Lotus Elise for long distances at high speed when I have an RS6 at hand. I am as dazzled by my RS6 as I am about my Porsches (and that's saying alot). As a driver of a MCoupe, perhaps you don't have enough experience with really great cars to be able to appreciate one. S6/MCoupeDriver 10-19-2003, 05:01 PM ...Forgetting a moment about the practical snow traction advantage of 4wd, given that the RS6 is the top of the line performer from Audi at the moment it sure does not make a good impression to post a video where a spirited drive along a not terribly twisty road sounds like the aforementioned Crown Vic. Tire squeal in not exactly an impressive perfomance cue. Now I can come to three conclusions from that video: A. The RS6 is a fat pig whale of a car that cannot cope with it's own horsepower..... well, I don't believe for a second that it could be so bad. B. That was a really bad clueless driver? C. the car was actually on snowtires? As far as the old BMW cant be driven in snow thing.... I owned an e39 5 series before the s6, I used to put snows on in the winter, I got away with the stock Conti Contacts last winter with the s6 which was very nice. But I really would not say that the RWD is undrivable in the snow as advertising seems to try and drive into our heads ("buy 4wd or be very afraid!")... S6/MCoupeDriver 10-19-2003, 05:12 PM I can only hope the RS6 comes with better brakes than on my S6 which seem to warp the disk every couple of thousand miles.... As far as you MCoupe comment.... You're in NJ right? want to come to the next New Jersey Region SCCA autox? I'll be glad to take you for a ride in mine. I can guarantee you'll change your mind.... if you don't pee your pants first! Cheers! Alan(NJ) 10-20-2003, 01:51 AM I'll pass, but I'm sure you do very well with your MCoupe. I too hope that my RS6 turns out to be reliable, but I am only asking it to be a great road car, not race car. It is a great road car. jatwrite 10-20-2003, 04:15 PM ...now I wonder what all the noise is about -- the complaining about tire noise, that is. Yes, it's there, but I wouldn't call most of it "squealing." Most of it sounds about the same as I hear on my S4 with Bridgestone Potenza S03s: yes, there is noise as the tires distort and more of the sideswall scrubs the pavement, but most of it is not squealing and it is not in the same league as an LTD IMO. As for traction in the snow, I based my post not on what any advertising said, but rather what a physician who owns a 5 series told me when I asked him how he liked the car. He had no idea I drove an Audi or anything else AWD. |
