View Full Version : Had a little stoplight-to-stoplight fast dance this morning with an LS2 400HP Pontiac GTO...

and literally wiped the floor with him. I fully expected him to hand me my bacon on a platter but he just couldn't get away from the line without smoking the tires or "slow-launching" which was about as fatal to his chances. And he couldn't run with me from a rolling start which to me seems absurd. His car was definately an automatic.

He pulled out of my community just ahead of me and took off like a rocket so I thought I'll catch him at the first light (which is timed to be red) by the time you get to it when leaving my community on a green light.

I didn't want to abuse my driveline so I was just doing brisk, non-squealing launches and then punch it when his drivers door gets about to my front bumper. Amazingly enough soon as I did that he was out of the race and almost immediately in my rear view mirror.

2nd red light 4 blocks up the road and this time he's revving while watching the crossover lanes get an amber. He gets lightly on the brake and heavy on the throttle simultaneously. I decide to let him go just for a brief second and once again play catch-up. Well he gets so bogged down in smoke I saunter right past him, not even trying. I let him catch up but keep my RPMs at 4k so when he catches me we can both go to the next light. Again, soon as he's beside me and pulling HARD I stomp it and immediately start pulling on him until he again is visible in my rear view mirrow. That makes 2!

Last light he tries once more with less "off-the-line-go-pedal" while this time I decide to launch harder... not abusively hard but harder than the two previous times as now I'm getting a little more confident... ok, maybe a little cocky. This time I'm not watching the light but really concentrating on him, his car and his engine sounds which are flagrantly loud due to dual exhaust and what must be glass-packs. Soon as I hear him trounce it I let off the clutch (not side-step it) at about 2700 RPMs and am gone like a shot. Again he's in my rear view mirror so I let him catch up to me, again staying at 4k and he's now "wanting" the rolling start so soon as we're even I let him floor it then I follow suit. He gets about a full front fender length on me and I'm dead even with his rear wheel out my pasenger window then I hit it. Within a seond we're even again and 4 seconds later I'm seeing that rear wheel in my rearview mirrow.

The next stoplight and he's done... doesnt wanna play any more. Won't even look over at me... pretending he was never racing in the first place. He's happy to leave that light after me and now driving like my grandmother did.

Even tho I was doing pussy-foot launches I was still leaving 2nd gear 10" wide by 6-8" long rubber marks on the road and getting 1-1.5 second chirps when upshifting to 2nd and even a slight mili-second chirps hitting 3rd gear. Both "firsts" for me as I just normally don't play drag race but this morning I just felt like a nut.

I came home and immediately went to Google to see what I was playing with. And it's basically as my lead-in states. I know it was a 2006, 6.0 litre LS2 as it was the only year that came in red and this was a red GTO. And I could tell by his engine sounds at low, mid and high RPMs that the engine was tight and not faltering as it didnt miss a lick or spit/sputter/backfire or hesitate at ANY RPM or have an excess of black smoke at WOT. Of course we both take a hit of 18% less HP/TQ due to elevation as that relates to his "published HP numbers." But the only thing I see that allowed me to get out on him without abusing my car was manual transmission with ultra-close ratio gears, quattro and he's at a whopping 800lb weight disadvantage with a slush box. But I'm still a LOT surprised once I got out in front of him I was still pulling away from him. That surprises me BIG-time as I still don't view my car as fast in a straight line. Sure it handles and brakes better than 99% of EVERYTHING out there but compared to all my previous turbo cars it just doesnt seem blisteringly fast to me in a straight line. I may have to start re-thinking that. Of course soon as I do someone WILL hand me my a$$ and I'll slither back under the rock I crawled out of humiliated for a year!

Once you install that mega-beast engine...I don't think you'll be slithering away from anyone!

Always good to hear about a meathead muscle car driver getting tounced!

When Im holdin your wheel
All I hear is your gear
When my hands on your grease gun

still sound absolutely amazing though, I'm not going to lie to you... but that's the redneck in me talking who's in love with small and big block V8s ;)

Sounds like you're having fun. Only time I can chirp the tires on my A4 is on slick or gravelly surfaces ;) The 4000 is a different monster, but that's also because of the non-locked center diff when I play.

BTW, do you have the center diff locked on that 4k tranny you're running when you did this?

Even "some" factory Mustangs are starting to get really good exhaust tone. But the GM LS7 exhaust sound is to die for!

I did a little more reading on the GTO after posting yesterday and also found they ony have a 3:29 FD ratio which I'm sure with my 4:11 FD ratio is the only reason I could pull on him from a rolling start at 4k.

And I put my winter tires back on a few weeks back to make some 15-60MPH 2nd gear runs to compare the differences tires make in REALLY hot temps. My winter tires are still very wide (235/45 on 17X8.5" wide wheels) and V-rated but they're nowhere near as sticky as my Z-rated summer tires. While I can "chirp" 2nd gear with the z-rated ties I can't leave 6-8" long rubber on the ground when doing it like I can with winter tires and I can't make 3rd gear chirp at all like I can with the winter tires.

I only lock my center diff when on a road course and LOVE what it adds! But never on the streets as it's just too weird on tight lock-to-lock turns and/or especially when parallel parking. And runnng all lightweight motorsport driveshaft and axle CV's makes locking the center diff even worse on the street... but LAWDY they accelerate like crazy in a straight line!

Impressive stuff, shows what a tuned 'slow car' can do!

I can chirp my tires through 3rd as well w/ the 4000, and I too am running snow tires (but 205s).

My favorite after letting loose in 1st-2nd gear is braking as you can feel the whole car just complain because the tires don't want to grab on that hard ;)

Also fun to scare the people around you as they lock up REALLY easily!
