My 97 A4Q has around 105K miles and Im not sure if the timing belt has ever been done. STFA and realize that why i am in there, I might as well change the WP and Therm. Is it really a pain in the arse to change it yourself, or is it worth paying some one $350 to change (minus parts?)
Thanks

It's a pretty well documented procedure. search the archives and I am sure you will find one or two sets of instructions.

It appears that the timing belt tools will make this an easier job. I bought a set, since at 200k on the engine, there's a good chance I'll need to use them again to fix something else -- valve seals, etc.

I'll be doing this myself this weekend (hopefully) on my 95 A6q if all the parts get here tomorrow.

What level of comfort do you have when working on cars? I've done many T-Belt Jobs in I-5 cars, so I'm not worried taking this on for the first time. To me, it's a time issue, not a matter of ability.

Good luck,

let us know how it goes.

Im in the process of moving into a new house, plus work and kids, not to much of time for anything.
I have done timing belts in Neons and a Honda, so i have a little knowledge. I think im gonna attempt it. If I get in over my head, I will call and get it towed (or pay for a mechanic to do it at my house)

Give me a laser-cut degree wheel, common hand tools, 3 hours and I'm good to go!

Did my 12V last summer. Made this write up. I'd recommend getting the audi-specific tools. I can help if you get stuck on something!

http://forums.audiworld.com/9080/msgs/406705.phtml
