I removed the heat shield on the passenger side. The three upper bolts for the exhaust manifold are right there. And one sort of under neath. The other two are well hidden. How are you guys removing the head on these engines? Do you pull the entire engine or go after the three bolts on the end of the exhaust manifold where it connects to the down pipe? If I need to do it from underneath or loosen an engine mount, let me know. Thanks.

Well four exhaust manifold bolts came off before one was stripped. I think it was stripped before I started since I could not get the socket to fit snuggly before applying any strength. Anyway, I sprayed the three bolts on the end of the exhaust manfold with PB Blaster. Two of the bolts are easy to get to underneath. One of them is kind of hard too get to while underneath, but easy from up top. I'l try again tomorrow.

Yup, lower three bolts on the exhaust is the way to go. All three came right off with the ar gun. All bolts are accessible with an extention and a flex joint. The socket size is 13mm.

All I have to do now is buy the right tool to remove the head bolts (Audi tool is opposite of tool I used for VW head bolts). Then head will go to shop too replace the bent valves. New guides and seals if needed.
